getting rid of fleas is a THREE STEP process.

1. bathe the animals w/a VERY good flea shampoo, then the animals need to be treated w/ medication you get from the vet. depending on the size of your dog it will be between 15-40 dollars for a six month supply. you apply the liquid from the little capsule between their shoulder blades.

2. Have the yard and house sprayed. you can do your best killing off the fleas on the animals but you will NEVER get rid of them completely unless you have someone spray your house and yard w/something that will kill adult fleas AND eggs.
they DO make a spray that should be safe for animals and children to be around, but i would spend the night at someone elses house the day of the spray.

3. Clean ALL cloth in the wash! Fleas will lay eggs on ANYTHING, so you will need to wash ALL bedding, clothing, rugs etc. and any hard surfaces need to be cleaned w/bleach or 409, or even wiping things down w/Clorox wipes.

First, treat the pet with Capstar. This is a pill that you get from the vet that will kill all of the fleas that get on the animal for the first 24 hours. Second, use either Frontline or Advantage, these can also be purchased from the vet. Frontline can be used on pets 12 weeks old or older. Advantage can be used on animals as young as 6 weeks. If the pet is old enough for either product, switch back and forth between the two. One month use one, the next use the other. The reason I recommend this is that there are two main types of fleas that infest pets. One product works better on the first type and the other product works better on the second type. By using both, you make sure you have covered all your bases.

Once the pet has been treated, you must treat your home and yard. The best products to do this would include not only a killing agent, but also a sterilization agent. Inside, I would use Ultracide, if you can get it. (Many on line sites sell it, including e-Bay.) Follow the instructions on the label! Wash all animal’s bedding and vacuum frequently. Throw out the vacuum bag or dump the catch container after every vacuuming. Also, put a flea collar in the bag or catch container, this will help you kill any fleas that you vacuum up. You can never vacuum too much! DO NOT STEAM CLEAN YOUR RUGS! This is a big one! This can hatch flea eggs and make your problem worse.

Outside I would use Demon WP mixed with Gentrol or Nylar, carefully following label instructions. Treat the entire yard, paying special attention to under bushes and low hanging branches. Most of these products can be bought at any Do-It-Yourself Pest Control company either on line or in a store.

Treating your house and yard is just as important as treating the pet!

It is also very important to stay away from the grocery store or box store products like Zodiac or Hartz. Many of these products can cause severe allergic reactions in animals.

You're not using the correct methods. Grooming/bathing your dog and keeping carpets clean won't stop fleas. They need to be KILLED by using an appropriate insecticide.

Go to a vets and pick up some Frontline or Revolution, this will keep the fleas off your dog. You also need a spray for your house.

Grooming your dog isn't going to do anything for your flea and tick problem. All it does is keep your dog smelling nice, feeling nice and keeps the hair problem to a minimum.

The best thing you can get for both fleas and ticks is K9 Advantix. Not only does this kill the fleas and ticks but it repels them as well as mosquitoes.

The other suggestions about cleaning your carpets and bedding are ok, I mean if you want to be meticulous about it thats your choice. You could also do the yard.. if you really wanted to try and get rid of them but other animals WILL bring the fleas back and its a never ending battle when it comes to your lawn. So in my opinion don't waste cash trying to exterminate on the outside.

Thing about fleas though, they will instinctively be attracted to and jump on the warmest living body in the house and this warm body is your dog (as he/she is alot warmer then humans).
So no need to worry about the fleas already in the home, once the product is on the dog, they will be attracted to him/her and remove themselves naturally. This includes the ones that jump on your dog from outdoors.

As Shepherd pointed out you have to do it all on hte same day?

Dont just groom the dog bathe the dog and clean any mats or carpets it lies on a lot!

When you wash and groom the dog make sure you comb aand get wet places like below the neck or behind the ears or the thick fringes of fur along the back legs ... any places where there might be skin folds that flea powder or water cant get to!

Do any of your neighbours have dogs with fleas?

Possibly the dog is picking up fleas off them?

You need to have your carpets professionally treated to get rid of both fleas and flea eggs. Brushing, mopping, and vacuuming reduce the problem but don't do away with it.

You may be able to treat carpets yourself by getting a non-toxic powder (usually with boric acid) and sprinkling it on the carpets. After you let it sit, you can vacuum it up.

I use the monthly flea treatment frontline I get from the vet on my 2 dogs. Keeps the fleas away.

Another thing is that after vacuuming you need to either dump the cannister and dispose of in the dumpster outside or throw the vacuum cleaner bag away in the dumpster - just vacuuming is not going to kill the fleas they will just have a better breeding ground inside your vacuum cleaner and then reinfest everything.

I would suggest a professional pet control company to spray your home & yard.
Capstar pill to rid your pet of fleas.
I am not a HUGE fan of the spot on treatments. Here in FL I am finding they are not working well.
I DO however find that a healthy pet on a GOOD diet doesn't not attract parasites.
Go to your local natural pet store & choose a holistic food for your pet. Keep your pet clean & healthy and you will find you have less problems with parasites in general.

bozema is exactly right...frontline plus is great stuff.

for the house...after you treat the dog youll have to go through and clean everything thoroughly to get rid of the fleas and their eggs, but as far as the frontline plus..its great stuff, i love it.and you can give your dog a capstar...you can also get that at your vet. and it will kill all the fleas on your dog in roughly half an hour. then the frontline plus will keep them off

i used frontline for most of the summer and still had a few fleas...i switched to frontline PLUS and i havent seen one since.
