I am confused when the operator asks if my stay is for leisure or business when I make reservation. Why do they ask the question? Which one gets better rate?

Many times, business travelers have certain discounts available to them, through their company or association. Also, hotels have conferences, and it may be a way of asking if you are going to be joining a group. They also, like to room "lesiure" travellers, away from groups or business travellers, to avoid noise complaints. Also it helps with the demographics of the hotel's advertizing, and staffing.

its usually best to reserve your hotel in advance. Although you hear a lot about "last minute deals", those opportunities are not that common really. Depending on what day of the week it is and where you are traveling, it's possible the hotel can become sold out or approach a higher level of occupancy. If you are on a budget then you should probably reserve in advance. If you've got extra money (should the room rates go up) you could always chance it in hopes of a lower rate by showing up and requesting a room.

Nah, the rates are the same for the same days of the week. My husband works at a hotel. The reason they ask this is mainly for demographic purposes...they know how to tailor their advertisements for the group of people most likely to be staying during certain parts of the year. Also, leisure travellers seldom overstay their reservations since they have to go back to work, but business travellers sometimes stay longer than they expected.
