It seems like everything's a sin. How do catholics make it through every day without becoming overwhelmed with guilt?

No.

Your Catholic friend needs to learn a bit more about his or her faith.

Natural body functions are not sin.

Sin is a deliberate thought, word, deed, or omission contrary to the eternal law of God.

In other words, sin is anything that hurts your relationship with God.

With love in Christ.

Your friend is grossly midlead. Merely going to the bath room is not a sin. I suppose there are things you could do with bodily waste that are considered sinful, but merely going to the bathroom is not sinful.

Properly instructed Catholics carry little if no guilt at all. This is because properly instructed Catholics know they can seek forgivess for ANY sin via the Sacrament of Confession. The sooner they receive this sacrament, the sooner they can release their guilt.

Being a Catholic is, contrary to popular belief, is a release of guilt, not the piling on of guilt.

Absolutely yes, defecation is a sin. Not just for Catholics but for all who call themselves a Christian.

I would think a better question would be how do fundamentalist Christians make it through every day without being overwhelmed with guilt........?

Your friend got that from the episode of Family Guy where Peter and Lois are potty training Stewie.

They go into a children's bookstore and are offered "Everybody Poops." They turn it down and are offered, "Nobody Poops But You." When they tell the salesman they're Catholic, he offers them, "You're A Naughty Boy and That's Concentrated Evil Coming Out the Back of You."

It's a joke based on a perception that Catholicism produces overbearing guilt feelings about natural bodily processes. But Catholics don't actually think that pooping is a sin.

Sounds like your catholic friend is talking through their bottom....of course defecation is NOT a sin. If you didn't deficate you would need hospitolisation.

If you're a Catholic, then being human is, in many ways, a sin. This is what is meant by "original sin". Defecation is probably the most striking example of an animalistic activity that has nothing to do with God; it's part of our imperfection.

You wonder why God didn't just make us perfect to begin with...

Tell your friend defecation is not a sin, but lying as he has to you is a sin.

Joslin that is not the way confession or Catholicism works. It is obvious from your statement you know nothing about either.

Either you, your friend, or both of you are defecating out of your brains.

Ok... what the heck is this a joke or what? Anyone that answered this question prior is unbelievable also.

DEFECATION / DEFINITION

1. intransitive verb expel feces: to expel feces from the bowel through the rectum ( formal or technical )

Now that is a sin?

Just one of your juvenile attempts to belittle something you do not understand. By the way, Kaopectate will help your condition.
