Hey guys, I am an American/ Lebanese (Christian) student with ambitions to move to Australia.

What I would like to know is, is it easy to become a citizen?..What is the process like?

Also, I will be moving with around 75 thousand US dollars, is that sufficient to start a small business, say travel hostel or restaurant there in either Brisbane, Melbourne or Sydney?

Another thing is, how does Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne compare in terms of business opportunity and cost of living?

One last small curiosity is, does blatant racism exist in Australia against the whites and the minorities including the Greeks and Lebanese, as I have heard some distubring things about it....Thats all, thank you all soo much....

To become an Australian citizen you have to take a test which involves pretty simple questions e.g " do you speak English?".The only question I can think of that wouldn't know is when is Australia day.For information go to Australian government sites. You should have no trouble becoming a citizen. That first person is wrong it's pretty easy to immigrate.
I think Melbourne is probably the best place to start a business and 75 thousand U.S should enough.
I would avoid Sydney,as it's a bit hard to get a start.
Australians are generally tolerant people, unfortunately , there are idiots in every country. There is not really blatant racism unless you move to a really troubled area.Good luck mate!

I'm Australian (originally from the Gold Coast in Queensland) and have been living in San Diego for 3 years.
It's very difficult to immigrate to Australia if you do not have family from there.
I'm not sure about setting up a business though, it may be an option.
I would suggest consulting with a good immigration attorney in Australia who can answer your questions.

Regarding racism - Unfortunately I don't think you can escape racism in any country, it's a worldwide issue. However, they are also a lot of great people in the world too, and I think you'll find most Australians to be very laid-back, easy-going and tolerant of people from all over the world. Our society is very multicultural.
Good Luck!

I think it is almost impossible to emigrate to Australia, unless you are married to a national, have a skill or profession they need, or if you have a ton of money.
