Elizabeth Mother of John the Baptist.

Why? In a wonderful little book called the Friendship of Women a Spiritual Tardition it describes the spiritual relationship of our friends in relation to particular qualities expressed in the stories of Saints. Elizabeth represented the factor of complete acceptance. Accepting Mary (a pregnant, unwed teenager) into her home. Offering her a place within her life, as she is. These were qualities I longed to emulate in my life so I chose Elizabeth as my Saint and example of what I hope to be.

I picked my eldest sister's name-Marie. The nuns gave me a hard time because they said there was no Saint Marie. I had to convince them that Marie was the formal name for Mary and Saint Mary was a saint.

St. PETER. And I'm gay, so that must have been at least freudian, even when I was 14.

The best thing that came out of being confirmed is that I fell in love with this guy who was in my confirmation class. Too bad he didn't know and I was too shy to say anything.

Joseph. I love his story -- or lack of story -- in the gospel.

I think he must've been a very holy and kind man for God to trust him with raising His only begotten Son. But there's not a lot of hooplah about him in the gospel. He seems content to fade into the background and let Jesus and Mary have all the attention. How's that for humility?

I think mine was Saint Beatrice, which I chose since Beatrice was my grandmothers name. She died when I was young so I thought it was a nice way to remember her.
