I'm trying to lose weight. I'm sedentary most of the day (behind a desk). But I decided to work out 40 min twice per day M-F, and once per day on weekeneds.

Does that seem resonable and do you think I'll lose weight?

(I'm following a great diet plan)

if you are training at a high level of intensity then 80-90 minutes would be the absolute maximum in a single training session. since you are doing 40 minutes sessions then that's definetly no problem, and a very good idea as each session of exercise increases insulin sensitivity in the muscle cell. make sure to make each session count by pushing yourself. each week you should be performing more "work" than the previous week. in cardio this equates to traveling a greater distance at the same level of intensity and same time span. with weight this means either using more weight then the week before or preforming more reps.

If you have the time, why not? I would do cardio for 30-40 minutes and the other 30-40 minutes do strength training(machines or free weights). You do need to give your body some rest though. Maybe take a day off between workout days until you build up your body or alternate days like cardio one day and weights the next. Make sure you drink lots of water to keep hydrated too.

A few months ago when I went to a doctor he told me that newest research indicates 1-2 hours to maintain weight but to seriously lose weight at LEAST 2-3 hours a day. This makes sense because about 10 years ago I lost 60 pounds and had been working out for a few months about an hour a day with no results at all. I did not start losing weight until I was working out for 3 hours a day of cardio. No pain, no gain.

I think it's excessive. 40 minutes a day most days a week should be plenty. You can maximize the effect of the 40 minutes by doing the elliptical machine (if your local gym has one), since it burns more calories per minute than a treadmill or stationary bike, or jogging for that matter. Beyond that, I suggest you lengthen the time period you want to lose the weight. That's healthier anyway.

it's okay to work out for 80 minutes 5or6 times in week. one day in week you have to take off and give your body a break
