Sorry about that typo - the statistics say (and I meant to say) 90% of the top scientists. My bad.

I'm sure some denounce the existence of a God, but I would hope most wisely choose to at least be open to the idea that a higher power might exist, but not go so far as to assume they know the nature of such a power simply by managing to unravel some of Its mechanisms behind life, quantum mechanics, supernovae, and other fantastic phenomena in the universe. I think scientists in general strive to know the how, but necessarily need to stay impartial about the why, about the nature of the universe. Certainly some are colored more than others by their beliefs or lack thereof, but hopefully their peers offer a system of checks and balances to rationally argue and if necessary refute points of contention that don't stand up to logic and reason.

Your premise is incorrect. A lot of scientists don't believe in God. (And "God" is usually defined as a "personal God". So, a lot of scientists would say they don't believe in God, but they do believe in "something powerful out there.")
A National Geographic poll showed that about 40% of scientists believe in God. I saw somewhere else that the belief in God breaks down differently for different disciplines. Medical doctors (I believe around 60-70%) believe in God, and astronomers and physicists tend to believe in God. Chemists and biologists are least likely to believe in God.

Also, just because someone is atheist doesn't mean they're not trustworthy. Myself? I'm both a scientist and a Christian, but I know a few atheists. They're all nice people.

I don't trust top scientists any more than I trust the general public (well, maybe a little more). I do however trust there is not some massive worldwide conspiracy among them to spread false informatioon.

I've worked with some intelligent scientists, honestly. I'd trust them when it comes to questions about science, but not when it comes to questions about, say interpersonal relations.
Peace to you.
