you may want to check the inside control unit on it also those will give the same problem if it has vacuum to it then it should work ,but when you accelerate your on a lower amount of vacuum, and they will temporarily close off sometimes but should return to normal,if they don't you have a bad vacuum line or a bad check valve or a bad control unit, most of the ones i work on have had bad control units,or they loose the vacuum source,it runs through the fire wall and turns downwards there hard to get to sometimes, good luck on it.

when the mode door loses vacuum it defaults to defrost for safety reasons. when you open the throttle there is no vacuum in the intake. you have a leak or a bad check valve. follow the line out of the firewall to the engine to find the check valve. different trucks had them in different spots on the line, so i can't tell you exactly where to find it, but its on the passenger side of the engine. see if this valve only flows one direction. if it flows both, replace it. if its ok, and no leaks, check the vacuum reservoir. it holds vacuum reserve for when you open the throttle. its under the wiper cowl on the passenger side. see if it holds vacuum with a gauge. the seams can seperate and leak. in a rare case i saw one that had enough of a vacuum leak in the bottom of the intake to do this.

The mode doors in the heater box used to be operated by vacuum from the engine, not sure if that is the case on your '97 but check it out by changing modes to something else and try it. If you lose say defrost when you accelerate you have a vacuum actuator problem. When you accelerate vacuum drops, when you let off or cruise vacuum rises or remains constant.
