You'll have to have the junkyard apply for a "salvage" title, or find out who holds the current title and get a copy. The salvage title would probably be the easiest. I'm not really familiar with IL but you also might try checking with your local tag and title office. Mopeds (under 50cc engine) are titled differently. If you can come up with receipts, tell them you bought the parts and built it youself. If you can pull that off, you'll save a ton on back taxes, but you might still end up with a salvage title. Hope it works out for you.

You have to have the title as proof oyu didnt just steal the vehicle.
I can pull the VIN off any cars front window, or door if I wanted to, so the titles a definate must.
Im sure he can apply for a new title

File for a lost title and DMV will tell you what you need in order to prove it belongs to you. And you DO have to prove it belongs to you before they'll issue a new title and register it. 'Found it' isn't good enough.

You probably don't. IL sucks with titles, you need all this proof to show them before you can take ownership.
