It seems to me that most religions - when you strip them of all the stuff that we imperfect beings have added - have the same basic truth. Surely If we could get rid of all the historical nonsense and social rules that constitute religion, and strip it back to a simple spirituality we'd all get along together with love?

crikes Chris - I'm damned.
everyone else - is Chris being a little narrow minded here or just absolutely certain that every non Christian on the planet is being seduced by the devil?

Jessica - I'm a bit bemused by your observation that love and hate could be confused without rules to tell us which is which? Surely there can be NO confusion?

Itofine - very interesting - thanks. But i have to challenge you on one point - a grafted plant DOES NOT take on the genetic characterisics of its host.

You're going to get a lot of nay-sayers to this question, but I believe it's absolutely true.
Hope you're ready for a slew of thumbs-downs!

The answers you get will entirely depend upon each individuals faith or lack of it.
Every and each religion claims to be the one true path, however if you remove the historical and social rules from each religion you would be stripping the 'teachings or lessons'. The only major similarity is that as societies evolve and advance, they become more tolerant towards others.
It is human nature to try and save others from eternal damnation etc. As a species the human is taught to value life, so in saving ones physical life the true believer feels duty bound to save ones soul or spiritual life, sadly the message often gets interpreted in such a manner as to justify the use of violence or the threat of violence.
On a cynical note, if every religion were true, which Deity would emerge as victorious? As a Deity would they let their followers perish by the followers of another or even the Deity directly ?
Looking at various religions over the centuries the fragmentation of religions seems to be the name of the game. Divides between Quakers, Baptists, Catholics, Protestants. Muslims into Shite and Sunni to name but a few.

Alot of religions seem to have the same basic truth, but in actuality they have very different similar truths, I know I am almost contradicting myself, but not quite.
Their truths, are usually similar, but they are not the same.
In essence, one group says that this is ok, and another says it's not. This is religion at it's core.
Not just social rules.
Rules, and who makes them and if we should follow them, are the basis of religion.
Simple spirituality strips down to rules, because, simple spirituality must be defined. One group will say, my spirituality revolves around a God, and one will say it revolves around a tree.
The doctrin of LOVE is a good one, but by its self doesn't fit the needs of anyone. Who defines love if there are no rules to define it, love could be the same thing as hate without rules as to what love is.
So if rules are the basis of faith, which they are,
then we can follow the rules of logic, which faith is based on (most faiths), to see if we can all get along together with love.
Basic logic states that two contrary things cannot be true in the same way at the same time.
So because of this, Two faiths whose rules disagree, like all of them do when you compare side by side, cannot both be true in the same way at the same time.
Now while this is true, having a basic attitude of Godly love towards all of God's creatures and towards your creator, even if you don't understand it, can be very beneficial to your health, as recent studies have shown, and to your mind and your life.

Some religions have the same basic truth, but not all of them do.There are two types of religions. Monotheistic and Polytheistic. A person who has a monotheistic religion believes in only one G-d. A person who has a polytheistic religion believes in more than one G-d. Judaism and Chritianity are examples of monotheistic religions, and Paganism is an example of a polytheistic relgion. You could say that all polytheistic religions have similar basic truths, but they aren't exactly the same. Same with monotheistic religions. You could say that they have similar basic truths, but again, they aren't the same.
Really hope this help >^..^<

I disagree--faith does not seem for the actuality--faith seems to mantain it extremely is own ability base. If faith regarded for actuality we does not have fundamentalists. technological know-how searchs for the actuality in an opposed way which ensures that any fake speculation would not final long. seem at faith--there are nonetheless people who believe the noah and the ark tale even nevertheless there replace into not in any respect a worldwide flood in the previous couple of hundred million years.

Most religions have one thing in common. Followers must believe that some imaginary being is controlling and/or directing their lives without any real evidence that there such a being who it interested in them. It also helps if they accept that some person who may or may not have some sort of qualification can act as a contact with this imaginary being. I say most religions as I think budism does not have such deity.

Yes, I believe so. But I'm sorry, I just can't bring myself to agree with Christianity...ah, well.
I don't have a fixed religion; I believe in God and spirits but I believe there are different paths to Him.

I think if you break it all down. There is one God in most religions. All have a disciple who comes on Gods behalf. So basically whom ever tells the story to you in the end we only have one real God.

I agree...I think, in fact, for the most part society is drifting towards this. But, there are too many abuses by power hungry people at this time....maybe hundreds of years from now....one can only hope.

inherent truths, yes.
for example: the Thou Shalt Not Kill and Thou Shalt Not Steal commandments? those have been around for much, much longer than christianity. If you look at pretty much the majority of religions out there its basically a tennant of them all.
its a basic rule for living in groups. you dont steal, you dont kill...hell even animals have this rule...and they dont even have a language.
