They go after mice because it's hardwired into their DNA to hunt down small prey. Sometimes they eat them but sometimes they will just play with them until they die and then leave them. You can't train it out of a cat to hunt, it's just what they do. They have no concept of cruelty or malice, it's just a genetic drive.

HI
cats always retain their wild hunting instsincts even though they get fed from their owners. It's just an instinct. They are usually attracted by the fast moving action of mice.
Some may eat the mice some may just leave them. They don't really play with mice they are practiceing thier hunting skills and they toss them around to get the mouse into the right position for the final strike. Cats kill mice by biting the neck as it is a quick kill and they won't risk any injury themselves.

Usually, cats go after mice because they want to play with them. If you take a shoe lace or a string, and rockit side to side infront of a cat, they would want to play with it. Sometimes they kill the mice though.

They eat them. Mice are common fare for barn cats. My cats on the other hand would run away from a mouse.

Cats are carnivores, they eat meat. Anything they can catch and kill is meat. Cats also like to play with anything that moves. If they are not hungry they will play with the mouse. Although the mouse might not survive this, the cat might not actually eat it.

the cat is a natural preditor, how ever if the cat doesnt eat the mouse and brings a head or body part to you, then the cat is showing affection and bringing you a gift.
