What is your Appendix for?

Also why do we have one if we can live without one, just curious.

Your appendix is a small, finger-shaped pouch connected to your large intestine, in the lower right part of your belly, also called your abdomen. The appendix really has no purpose, if you need to have it removed, your body will work just fine after the operation. Some researchers think that many, many years ago, the appendix was once a useful part of the digestive system, but we don't need it anymore.

In contrast to Wikipedia and some of the answers here, modern medical textbooks on the immune system consider the appendix to be a vital part (even though you can live without it) of the immune system.

I thought I read somewhere that other animals have a working appendix. I am thinking that it is a reservoir full of bacteria where the body digests partially rotten, fiberous food for a little more nourishment.

I could be totally wrong on this.

Nothing !! Cows use theire appendix for diegesting grass and plants . when humans ate plants houndreds of years ago the appendrix had a porpuse.

it is thought that there is no real purpose for the appendix now.

edit: soldier is right that there was a school of thought lead by darwin that it was once used for berries and leaves but as we evolved to eat more meat and less leaves and berries it shrank to make room for the stomach

i have always beleived your appendix was used to grind down seeds and roots when we were hunter gatherers thousands of years ago
now we dont eat these things as often we dont need it
