To be honest , I am just trying to understand the issues involved .
I am an Atheist and don’t butter my bread . But I think I ought to know more about why People butter their bread and how and why they decide which side to butter . – Even why they decide to cut off the crusts !

Sorry if I caused offence – Just trying to educate myself .

Bin Laden would have been born even without Israel in world map.

If we in the western world had not decided to put all the jews that we didn`t want living amungst us, into the Arab/Jewish state of palestine, at the end of WWII, then the trouble wouldn`t have started. The Arabs were never involved in the extermination of the jews, like ALL the other western states were. But they ended up paying for the actions of the west. The dispossed, and the families of the murdered Arabs find it very difercult to forget what was done to them, by the christian west which wanted rid of the jews.
If ever there was a recepe for hate, that must be it.
The fact that the same governments rule with little change must appear to them as an endorsement of the actions ,by the general public
.
The chicken always comes home to roost..!!

I think the problem will be with us until the Arabs get back their rightful say in the whole area called Israel/Palestine.

Many miss the point here. It is no good fighting terrorism militarily, it achieves nothing. The only way to deal with terrorism is to have a good hard think about its cause, and not just condemn it, since this is not constructive. There comes a time when all such problems are resolved. The west, not just America and the UK, needs to seriously ask the question "why do a significant number of Arabs/muslims hate us enough to attack us?" and the answer lies in our foreign policy towards Israel, and to some, the very fact that Israel exists at all. Now we have a problem. Israel DOES exists. The fact that it ought not to doesn't matter much, it isn't going to go away, but maybe a little even-handedness in foreign policy would help. Israel should not be allowed to get away with illegal settlement and occupation of Arab territories and oppressing Arabs on a daily basis. Other countries have been bombed by the west for far less.

Bin Laden claimed he was protesting American forces being in Saudi Arabia.

They were there from the Gulf war peace treaty which required policing of the no-fly zones in the north and south of Iraq. The gulf war happened because of the invasion of Kuwait.

Kuwait was not invaded because of the existence of Israel, but because of the aftermath of the Iran-Iraq war. That took place because Saddam thought that the Iranian revolutionaries would be a soft touch after the overthrow of the Shah, so it stems form the Iranian revolution in '79. This was due to internal problems with the Shah and had not much to do with Israel.

The Shah was there because of British influence during WWII because they wanted someone compliant in charge of the oil reserves, . . . . and so on. You can blame 9/11 on the Norman invasion of 1066 if you want to go back far enough.

Now, the real reasons for the 9/11 terrorist acts are debatable. I doubt that Bin Laden would have found terrorists so easily if the Arab - Israeli conflict did not exist, or if America was not giving massive support to Israel.

How soon we forget!!!

The First Barbary War 1801-1805 and the Marines have a song about it "from the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli." The Tripolitan War or Barbary Coast War was the first of two wars fought betweenthe US and North African muslims. These were the independent Sultanate of Morocco, and the 3 Regencies of Algiers, Tunis and
Tripoli which were quasi-independent entities belonging to the Ottoman Empire.

In 1786 Jefferson and John Adams went to negotiate with Tripoli's envoy to London, Ambassador Sidi Haji Abdrahaman. They asked him by what right he extorted money and took slaves. Jefferson reported to Secretary of State John Jay, and to the Congress:
"The ambassador answered us that (the right) was founded on the Laws of the Prophet Mohammed, that it was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have answered their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them where ever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as prisoners, and that every Muslim who should be slain in battle was sure to go to heaven.

There was no State of Israel at this time. And the USS Cole was not the first USA ship that Muslims attacked. We lost the Philadelphia and the Intrepid in this war with the Muslims.

This is an old enemy.

I don't know. 9/11 in the US and 7/7 in the UK were reactions to the politics of both countries in the middle east. Israel is one of the reasons, but their are others. Another reason the support that the US and UK both give to Monarchs and Tyrants who supply oil to each nation.

There is no doubt that their is a deep hatred of Israel in the middle east. However Arabs have no one to blame but them selves because they allow their countries to be ruled by Monarchs. They feel powerless and emasculated.

In Saudi Arabia for instance, you have an educated population with no job and economic opportunities. The whole country's economy is based on oil and the profits all go to the royal family.

This is a form of government that countries in the west gave up a long time ago. I do not blame the state of Israel, they have a right to exist and defend themselves.

I highly doubt it because if Israel was REALLY the issue that had Osama peeved, he would have flew a plane into Israel. Er, I should say, had a plane flown...

You know, I was thinking about something today that just really baffles me. We (well, the US govt) supported, funded, and elevated the status of Osama, of Sadam, and of Musharaf. Look at how well that went...
Wondering now why these people were chosen by the US govt for power.

Poseiden: don't forget eggs, broccoli, and cabbage!

I'm a bit surprised of some of the answers. Just as it's rediculous to assume Israel is the cause of 9-11, it's equally as rediculous to assume 9-11 happened because they're "jealous of us."

Bollocks. We actually partially have the French to blame for starting this West/Arab hatred, when they invaded Algeria. Although I don't suppose all the countries which have had American bombs dropped on them are very happy about that either. People like Bin Laden really don't care at all about the Palestinians; they're just claiming to to drum up support. The 7/7 bombers were primarily angered by the invasion of Iraq, not Israel.

To the first poster: I-S-R-A-E-L. Learn to spell it first, then support it.

Possibly but what people seem to disregard is the fact that the jews where oppressed for hundreds of years. They where given land and supported to keep it. The 9/11 and 7/7 attacks where born of jealousy of the wests advancements and apparent luxury.

If there were no Islamic terrorists and murdering bastards such as Bin Laden, there would be no 9/11 in the US or 7/7 in the UK.

Discuss.
