I don't know much about keeping cats so I want cat owners to advise me on this.

I live myself and want something to come home to at night.
I wouldn't let the cat outdoors (not a good area and roads nearby)
The cat would be left alone all day (I work and at college)

cats are very easy to maintain... they love a schedule too...

I think they will be OK to be alone all day, I used to live by myself, and my cat did very well at that point..

Just take some time to read up on how to keep a cat... and always make sure you spend time with your cat everyday... Base on your busy lifestyle, I would suggest an adult cat...

good luck

I was never a cat person until one decided to move in with me. When she first moved in, I was leaving home at 9.00 a.m. and not getting home until 11.00 p.m. The last few weeks I have not been working and spent almost every day at home. She is an indoor/outdoor cat. As the cold weather draws on, I wish she would become an indoor cat as I have to leave a window open for her (no place to put a cat flap). I suspect that if you get a cat as an indoor one, it won't know any different. Some of the things I love about being cat-owned, are:
Having a little black fur ball waiting at the door when she hears my keys in the door.
Lots of laughter as she does silly things (bringing me a mouse stuck to a glue trap, rolling around the floor when I sprinkle catnip on the carpet).
The filthy looks I get when I stroke her for too long.
Today I was decorating and she climbed up the ladder before I did (her DIY skills leave a lot to be desired though!).

It has been trial and error in her care, because I knew nothing about cats before, but it is so lovely to have a companion. Like one or two of the others, I would suggest a slightly older cat, then at least it will have been litter trained and will need less stimulation than a younger kitten. Vets bills can be quite expensive, but the rewards of owning a cat far outweigh the cost of jabs etc (if you can afford it!).

Go to a shelter, I'm sure there will be a cat for you.

There are many cats that prefer to be solitary or only around few people. There are many that have FIV and have to be kept inside, this would be ideal for you. (FIV is feline AIDS, cats can live for years with it but they need to be kept indoors to stop it spreading through the cat population). This may not sound like such an attractive prospect, but there are shelters crying out for people who want indoor cats and would be willing to take on an FIV case!

I don't think a kitten would be a good idea for you because they have lots of energy and need to be entertained a lot - a kitten would be bored left home alone, but many an older cat would be cool with it.

u are perfect! I think cats would love u! cats don't need someone to be with them all day but like attention! u are so great to not let a cat outside! did u know that 90% of outdoor cats die because they were injured outside? ALso if u want a particular breed i think u would like a ragdoll! If u want something to greet u at the door.. Get a Ragdoll! I have one and when I come home she runs to the door
I hope this was helpful

A cat would be good. I adopted an older cat about a month ago and I just love her. She's okay by herself all day. I just make sure she has fresh food and water and her litterbox is clean. She runs to the door when I get home, and in the evening likes to sit with me. She also likes to sleep at my feet.

Cats are fine by themselves during the day. They are very independent and sleep most of the day. Kittens require a lot more attention so an adult cat is a very good idea. It's also easier to tell whether an adult cat is friendly and calm based on how he/she responds to you and the cat's history then it is to tell with a kitten.

I would try an adult cat from a shelter. There are a lot of really sweet older cats that would adore a nice, quiet life with you. Kittens really need a lot of love! If you really want a kitten, get 2.

I got 2 brother kittens, they keep each other company so they don't get lonely all day alone.
