If I understand what they are writing, I don't care! That is their business.

Depends on how many mistakes they make, and also what they're writing.

On here, other forums, chat, personal emails, if it's just an occasional typo I really don't care. This is pretty informal, people shouldn't have to spell check every word or correct every single typing mistake. But if it's all garbled so it's hard to read that's annoying!

In formal situations -letters for work, printed matter, especially books- as well as school work, I don't think there should be any mistakes. I just read a book with short stories and I think they forgot to edit one of them; one story had about two dozen typo's, the rest of the book was fine. It was an old Hitchcock pocket and hitting a mistake sort of jarred me out of the suspense every time.

Sometimes the teacher in me comes out, and I admit it does bug me. Most of the time I can tell if it is an "honest" mistake, such as a typo or just someone who rushed and didn't proofread. I think it also depends on the formality of the writing--it would bug me more on a resume or a term paper than a post here, for instance. I look back over things I've written and am bothered by my own careless mistakes as well.

When it is severe and chronic, I get the impression that either the person is not well educated, English is not his/her first language, or he/she just doesn't care. (Or a victim of whole language "inventive spelling" curriculum--don't even get me started on that!!) So if someone doesn't want to give that impression, he/she should probably take the time to proofread and work on spelling!

An occasional mistake can't be avoided. However, the effect of multiple spelling mistakes in a post is to lessen the credibility of that person as it reveals a certain lack of care and responsibility in the representation of there own opinions and integrity.

Yes. Not because there's a spell check feature on Yahoo!answers, but because as a spelling buff myself, I don't understand HOW you can spell something improperly. It's all phonetic... take some time and stop being so friggin lazy!

Grammatical mistakes are equally bad. Like failing to write 'spelling mistakes' instead, when you had the chance.
But I am, like you, astonished that the most over-educated country in the world (USA) produces college graduates who cannot spell.
'Where did the purtians leave frome?' was one question I saw this week, here.

It depends. If there are several misspelled words it is irritating because there is a spell check, but sometimes it is jsut a slip of the finger and hitting the wroing key...I did the misspelled ones on purpose....lol.

Yes.

It makes them look dumb and/or careless, especially when a spell checker is available.

YES!

That is one of my pet peeves. Especially after the invention of spell check. Doesn't take long to do and makes you look so much smarter.
