I have heard this from many sources and I have also heard that there are laws on the books in some states that won't allow atheists to run for office. I have known many atheists and none of them are bad people. Why is it that people seem to dislike atheists so much?

Well, I will say this: I don't hate atheists, but I don't particularly like their arguments either. The Atheists that I have encountered never seemed to want to listen to the other side of the track and understand why people need something to belive in even if it could be wrong. One of my good friends back in high school who had been atheist had never picked up a Bible in his life, only based his facts off what is older brother-in-law said, and never once tried to find out what was going on on the other side. This lead to many arguments, and I love to debate and argue so I usually just cut him down with, "You can't argue an issue if you don't know all the facts. So until you pick up the damn Bible and figure out why I believe in it so much, you have no right--or reason--to be mouthing off." Unlike him, I used to read up on why atheists believed what they did, or didn't, so I had the other side of the coin and could argue effectively.

But that's just me.

The solutions will be contained in the body of the object you quote: "The degree of this intolerance is somewhat spectacular. My journey has taught me that atheists have a tendency to be very smart, thoughtful those with a severe widely used of ethics that they convey via to their common lives." for this reason, non-atheists will be a lot less smart on widely used. also, there are multiple non secular fundamentalists contained in the U. S., and those televangelists brainwash human beings in distrusting those who do not keep on with their faith (and do not deliver them money with a view to stay like millionaires).

The actual survey says "least trusted", not "most hated". There's a difference.

And it's because in our society, religion and morality are linked in the minds of a lot of people, to the point where anyone who does not practice a religion cannot be thought of as moral in the minds of a great number of people. It's a negative social stigma, and I hope I live to see the day when it begins to subside.

In my opinion it is because people don't like to think any other belief is is right other than their own. And the thought of someone not believing in god makes them mad. But this is most likely because they don't have an open mind. I'm not atheist but I'm not really sure what i believe.

Many people have been brainwashed by their respective religions to believe that a person without God must (by their definition) be a person without morals. They believe that morality can only come through a belief in (their) ideology of God. I have heard many people say this...and I think it is sad. The are stuck in the mentality of previous centuries. They need to open their minds and see that theism and morality are mutually exclusive. History is repleat with examples of atheist doing great things while the religions commit great atrocities in the name of their God. The oposite of this has also been true.

I'm a believer, but I certainly don't hate atheists. Or anyone for that matter. Hating is such an unproductive activity. Actually I have quite a few atheist friends. I disagree with their beliefs, but we still share a lot of common ground.

I haven't seen any sources that say that, maybe, next time, you could site the references.

I wouldn't say that atheists are the most hated minority. I would say that people like child abusers and other criminals are much more hated by people.

Because the majority love to embrace superstition and magical stories.

I have also included some links for those who want more proof on the subject.
