I think that a bed is a must. A dresser is good too unless you have a good closet. They make small card table/chair sets that he is probably just big enough for. I got my daughter one when she was 2 and she's still using it at 5.
I shared a room with my daughter until recently. (Now I just sleep in the livingroom.) So I'm use to working with little space. I think that a large 6' tall book shelf can be a great addition if you can keep him from climbing on it. And make sure to secure it to the wall so he doesn't manage to tump it over. I got one for my daughter and spaced the bottom two shelves close together then went up quite a way (higher than she could reach) for the top shelves. This made it hard for her to climb and provided some nice vertical storage space. (Put a few light decorations on the very top and items that you don't want torn up such as books and that could get messy such as crayons up out of his reach.)
A few toys would be nice too. But don't put too many to be removed if you catch him playing instead of sleeping in the middle of the night. Perhaps a horse big enough for him to ride on, a few big trucks, and an easy to move plastic tub of toys.
Perhaps you could also take him to the store or even your computer to print out a few pictures to hang on the walls. As they fade and fall, he can pick whatever theme he has grown into.

I have a 4 year old and a 2 year old boy. I have a small play table I got on sale. I really like the Closetmaid storage system. It looks like a book case with nine cubbies. They have them in a lot of the daycares. We bought the canvas bins for sorting. The bins are 11" cube. The bins will collapse if you try to stand on them but pop right back up. My 2 year old tries to stand on everything to gain more access I had to stay away from the little "sofa" because it got jumped on a lot instead we have a Pillow chair. You can't get height if you jump on it and there are no hard spots it hit. The 17 year old likes it too. I also have a short book shelf so they can both get the books they want to read.
Of course the must have for our family is the Tonka construction rug for all our cars and equipment to drive on. It matters what he is into but as long as there is a place for sitdown play, floor play, reading, and sleeping anyone would be happy.

My 3 yr old son has almost the same exact sized room and this is what he has in it:
1. Toddler bed
2. Tall bookshelf, fastened to the wall (mine's not a climber)
3. Nightstand with his small Television on it, has a drawer for storage
4. Train table (I put his trains in bins under the table)
5. Canvas bin for toys
I put his dresser in the closet since his clothing is short, and his shoes go in there also. I put the toys he plays with the least at the top of his bookshelf (like stuffed animals) and then the toys he plays with alot at the bottom. We also often clear out toys that are not played with because his room is so small! Best of luck!

We have a small bdrm. for our 2 boys ages 15mnths. and 3 1/2 yrs. They have bunk beds and two good size tall dressers that hold my 3 1/2 yr. old summer/winter clothing.. I also utilize the underbed to hold extra bed linens and the top bunk since no one sleeps there I use to store extra toys/bins/stuffed animals.. The double closet I have a double bar (you can get one that "hangs" like a hanger to maximize storage space...) It doesn't require hardware/mounting. I like to use the back of the door to hold shoes... Get a long enough storage bag for 15-20 pairs. I keep some toys in the room but not too much.. We have a downstairs playroom that has a bunch of toys and some toys we keep in wicker baskets in the livingroom... I bought a really nice twin bedset(s) matching from Target they are blue plaid w/ a blue bandana type print.. It matches perfectly with the furniture... Kinda a sublte "cowboy" western theme. They were $20 for 2 sets.. that included the comforter/sheets/pillowcases/sham...
I would use the bedroom for sleeping/dressing I wouldn't have a couch in there or anything like that... My children also have a desk.. That although they are too young to use now will come in handy for the future...
Good luck

I would limit the toys in his room since when he is a little older he will be more enticed to play when it's bedtime. Keep a few of his toys in the bedroom and the rest in a general play area such as the family room. Make sure the room has a good sleeping atmosphere, not too much light coming in and make sure the light coming in will not be on his face or bed.

nothing wrong with a small room, I dont know the demensions of my kids room but I live in a small apartment right now, the girls' room has their beds (now its bunkbeds) a toy box in the closet, a dresser and a storage shelf for books and stuffed animals and other stuff. I would say all he needs is a bed and some toys and hes good for now, no need to get him a bunch of stuff he wont use for 5 yrs down the road.

Just don't do anything really permanent that he'll out grow. Like children's murals on the walls and stuff. Little furniture is cool, just don't spend a whole lot of money on it b/c they out grow it so fast. Play tables and stuff can go in there, no matter where you put stuff like that, you'll have to give it away or throw it away soon b/c he wont play with it anymore. Whatever you feel is okay is okay........

my daughters had a vanity for yours it could be a 'work bench' we had a small table (ours was princess, again, you could go with a boy's theme) and we had a big toy box, the bed, a rocking chair, and their toys that sit on the floor always ready and accessible, although I must say, they played more in the family room then in their room! =) My daughters are 4 & 6 now, and they STILL color @ their small table, and dress up @ their vanity, so it's working! Good luck! =)

attempt having a frank talk which includes your dad and mom a pair of teenage lady sharing a room with a curious 5 year previous. don't get emtional yet do recent the information out of your point of view. you are able to stay away from the towel by ability of taking your outfits into the washing room with you and getting dressed there after your bathe.
