Does anybody know why I get a sharp, stabbing pain on my skin? It feels like being pricked with a hot pin, or receiving an electric shock, and can occur anywhere on my body, but usually emanates from a leg or somewhere on my abdomen. It tends to happen only once or twice per day. Sometimes accompanied by a strange, unpleasant "stunned" feeling- anyone who's maybe touched a bare wire and had a good jolt of electricity will understand what I mean by that.
Thank you.

This is reffered to as paresthesias or neuropathic pain and can have several different causes. The fact that it can occur on any part of your body, means that it is unlikely to be shingles, which affects a "dermatome" or specific area of distribution from the mid back to about the midline in the front on one side and is most often associated with a rash. You may want to identify the cause or at least rule them out as possible causes before classifying them as "idiopathic". There are some medications that help with this sort of pain. Neurontin and Lyrica can sometimes help, but identifiying and eliminating the cause, if there is one, should be attempted. Good luck.
