Okay, I have a fear of spiders and of heights. I really hate my fear of heights because I cant do ROPES courses at summer camp (Boy Scout). Is there a way to cure my fears? I really hate my fears. I got my fear of heights from my mom. I dont know where the fear of spiders came from. The wierd thing is that my uncle is afraid of snakes but I love snakes. My favorite animal. Im not a woos. I am tougher than most guys in my town. That is all that I am afraid of. Give me an answer on how to cure my fears.

Hello AMX Man:

To help overcome your fears, begin by learning all you can about the phobia. Get some good books on spiders, and read about them. Get some models, pictures, and then look at them. Touch the pictures, study the parts of the spider. If you begin to feel anxiety, take a break. Do something you really enjoy; playing a video game, or whatever it is you really like to do. When you have calmed down, go back to the spider image and work with it until you are uncomfortable again, then do the pleasing activity. When you can work with the spider model and begin to feel uncomfortable, close your eyes and pretend you are doing the pleasant activity. This may take a few days or even weeks, but when you can get to the point that you can overcome the anxiety of the spider with the pleasant thoughts, find a supportive friend and go to a pet store (or a friend who may have one) and ask if they have a tarantula you can hold. Tarantulas are menacing looking, but your research will tell you that they are gentle to humans, and are actually quite delicate. (In South America, they are eaten like crab.) It may take a few trips to the tarantula, but eventually you will overcome the anxiety, and may come to enjoy handling the spider.

As for your phobias of heights, a Scout high-ropes course will have lots of supportive encouragement. You will never be asked to do anything you do not feel comfortable doing, and no one will ridicule you if you cannot do the course. You will be securely anchored by fall restraints, and have absolutely no fear of fall-related injury. I am positive that you will learn to overcome the anxiety, and enjoy the experience.

Keep on Scoutin'

Do the ROPES course, that would be a step in the right direction!
