basically what blazs says is all true i merely wish to add that the people from ipd usa can hook you up not only in the engine but also in the handling department.
one note if you are thinking of freshening up your engine, instead consider the purchase of a turbo motor from a junkyard and rebuilding and modifying it to your particular needs [it's ok to use 7/9 series engines but you will have to change the intermediate shaft as there are no teeth to drive the 2 series distributor] doing it this way allows you to continue driving your car and save for parts until the engine is built.
you may also consider having the reciprocating Assembly balanced by a specialty machine shop [this really does make a difference]

Well with 185K on the engine first you'll have to rebuild it. You can probably get some speed equipment from IPD (google) but you have to be realistic about "fast". This is basically a heavy slow brick and you aren't going to make it fast with that engine in there unless you get really radical (turbocharging, nitrous)---which makes no sense.
They say that good suspension is worth 50 HP and I agree, so I'd start with shocks, brakes and tires. As for engine mods, if you can beat the smog laws, you can add a better camshaft, cold air intake and exhaust headers, but don't expect too much from all that.

I have a 1992 volvo 240. It's a great stable car, but it is the slowest thing ever. It's heavy and it's not worth the money to make it fast.

Turbo bricks, sweedspeed, IPD, and other forums can give you a good understanding as to what is involved to make the car go faster and if it's worth the time and $$$$$$$$. I don't remember any turbo 240s in that year. I do know that there are companies that offer V8 conversions on 240s to put a Ford 302 engine in them...Can you say "SLEEPER" ! ! !
GOOD LUCK WITH ONE OF THE SAFEST CARS EVER MADE !!!

Hello,
you can improve handling by fitting stiffer shocks and lowering the suspension via shorter, stronger springs.
For a better power (I assume it's a turbo engine, right? :D), you need to tune up your engine by:
- using a 'sport' camshaft
- modifying the inlet and exhaust tracts and the cylinder head, as well as the mechanical parts of the engine (lightened flywheel and crankshaft, better con rods and pistons etc.)
- using a programmable fuel injection system for getting maximum performance (e.g. Megasquirt, see www.megasquirt.info)
- fit a turbo or fit a bigger if already present
This is a somewhat complicated topic, but if you are interested in engine tuning, i recommend you to have the book Four stroke performance tuning from A. Graham Bell.
Regards

A lot of people tune up Volvos like that, and a lot of people don't know their potential. Turbobricks, as they are commonly referred to, are becoming easier and easier to upgrade. Many auto parts stores carry parts now for tuning older Volvos, you just have to look around.
