I leave that sort of decision making up to the car owners and NASCAR officials.
If a person can drive with the skills and precision neccessary to compete and win at that level, I wouldn't care if all they drove was a go-cart before they compete in NASCAR.

Most drivers start out racing as early as age 5. They start out racing different styles of go-karts.
Then they will work their way up to their local short tracks as they get older. Then at that point some drivers get their big break by knowing somebody, who knows somebody, who knows somebody, who works in NASCAR or for a team that competes in NASCAR.
Then that person will recommend the up and coming driver to a team owner to go check out. Many drivers in Nextel Cup today have gotten where they are through things like this.

Are you talking NASCAR Nextel Cup? Busch? Truck? Busch East? West? Modifieds? Dodge Weekly? NASCAR has a lot of different divisions.

I personally believe that the drivers should race in the Busch series for at least 1 year before heading to the Nextel cup series. That way it get them used to the Tracks-Procedures-Rules-Cars and ome very valuable experience!!!!

It should be case by case, just like it's always been. In other sports, players have gone straight to the top level with no ill effects (Kevin Garnett- NBA, Catfish Hunter- baseball).
For others, it was a disaster. A team owner should be smart enough to know whether his driver is ready for the level he's at. If not, that team won't be viable for very long.

Most kids start off in go-carts then they go to what they like. Most go the dirt route with midgets/sprints and or modifies if they want to stay off the dirt. This is when a driver decides if he/she wants to stay in open wheel or not. If stocks cars are their goal, then they go on to ARCA or the Hooters Cup (USAR Hooters Procup Series) or another lower NASCAR division. After that, some go to the Trucks but most go Bush, then *POOF* the Cup.

Are you talking about experience in different leagues?
I think that a driver should have to race in at least 10 Busch races prior to being able to compete in a Cup race.

When you say NASCAR, are you talking Busch, Trucks AND Nextel (Sprint/Winston Cup)? Or just Nextel Cup?

It`s not up to me, and Maybe that's good, but I think Nextel cup drivers should run at least one year in Busch,, but on the other hand doesn`t every one think the top drivers in sprint, Arca,etc
can drive well enough------ take Frank Kemmel-
I think he is good enough now;;;;;
But like I said good thing its not up to me

Apparently you need a few years in F-1 or Indy cars.
