I work at lax. Traffic is heavy most of the time, but usually early mornings and late afternoons. So mid morning-early afternoon should be OK unless there is an accident. I assume you are renting a car. They will give you a map, or for now go to yahoo maps. Take the 405 south to the 55 and you will see signs. The 55 you will go toward the ocean, either west or south on the off ramp. (Your right). Its not a bad drive.

it all depends if you want to go on a pleasure drive down Pacific Coast Highway south to Laguna, in which case allow yourself 2-1/2 to 3 hours, and expect pockets of congestion as you pass through beach communities.
If you want to get to Laguna as quickly as possible, take the 405 south, to the 5 south, then Laguna Canyon Rd to Laguna Beach. You will run into a little bit of traffic leaving LAX, and later through Long Beach, but the traffic is not too bad. you should arrive in Laguna in about 1-1/2 hours.
Welcome to the OC!

Well, if you are site seeing, I would go along the shore and maybe out around the Palos Verde Peninsula. You can take PCH (Ca. 1) south of the airport and then cut over toward Manhattan Beach/El Segundo. PCH between the airport and Seal Beach, is not right next to the shoreline, so I would not stay on it. South of the airport they have Strand Blvd, Hermosa Blvd, Beach Blvd, Ocean Blvd and so on until you get to Seal Beach. You might need a map or simply stay next to the ocean. You can't go wrong and eventually you will get to see Long Beach/SanPedro/Los Angeles ports. It is quite a sight to see. Then rejoin PCH south of Seal Beach and continue down to Laguna Beach. (In a hurry ? take the 405...but you will miss A LOT)....Have your camera ready, Have Fun..

LA traffic is bad all the time..... There is no secret route or trick to get from place to place better. Unfortunately you will be in traffic till you get a good distance from LAX and it will not get better till you are near the coast.
