According to the account of Josephus, Nimrod built the tower as an assrtion of his power over his people and as evidence that it was he and not God through whcih they would be made happy and propserous. It was part of his efforts to turn men away from god and to rely on him and him alone.
The result of this was that God saw the madness of the men and not only struck down and destroyed the tower, but made men to speak in differnt tongues and thus become unintelligable to one another, hence the Hebrew word Babel, meaning confusion being applied to the tower.
Accounts of Nimrod can be found in the Books of Genesis 10: 8-10, 1 Chronicles 1:10 and Micah 5:6.

The people played instruments and climbed up to the temple at the top where is located the COLLECTION PLATE. On their trips up they were promised that they might meet a god or angel going up and down the steps.
All such temples were navels. In the Book of Jubilees:
19 And he knew that the Garden of Eden is the holy of holies, and the dwelling of the Lord, and
Mount Sinai the centre of the desert, and
Mount Zion -the centre of the navel of the earth: these three

That is why the Judaizers have restored the Musical Worship Team to "stand at the holy place and lead you into the presence of God." These portals are said to have exudes musical sounds.

The tower was built for religious purposes. Some say it was built to better view the stars.
