Protists are eukaryotes, some are simple multicellular forms, many are motile, and most live a haplontic stage in their reproductive cycle reproducing by mitosis. Some are autotrophs but others are heterotrophs. All are water dependent to survive. They are aerobic.

Fungi can live away from the water but remain tied for part of their life cycle. Their multicellularity is complex with very specialized cells carrying out specific functions like digestion and symbiosis. All are heterotrophs that digest outside by secreting proteins onto their food. They absorb the digested remains. They grow hyphae capable of interpenetrating their symbiont to form mutual or parasitic relationships.

Animalia are extremely complex multicellular organisms. Most are independant of water for their life cycle. They do not have a haplontic life stage. Most are mobile, capable of independent motion, and all are heterotrophs. The various methods of acquiring mobility and nourishment are the result of special functions derived from cellular differentiation: respiration, circulatory systems, digestive system, nervous system, diplontic life cycle with internal reproductive system.
