Friday was originally the day ascribed tothe Norse Goddess Freyja. among the Nordic cultures she was a deity associated with fertility, fememnine sexuality and the powers containted therein. She was also a powerful mistress of a form of magic known as Seidhr, a sorf of Shamanic practice predating most other forms of magic in the region by some time. She was also listed on the role of the valkyries as their leader, Chosing one half of the warriors slain each day for her hall of Folkvang. A very complex and intriguing figure, far beyond a simple love goddess or goddess of magic or warrior goddess she amalgamated aspects of all three within herself. She was also the Second Wife of Odin and taught him the arts of Seidhr while he taught her the runes.

The Norse Goddess that Friday is dedicated to is (if memory serves) is Freyja. The Greeks and Romans did not dedicate specific days of the week to individuals Gods or Goddesses in the Classical and Hellenistic periods although that changed in the later Imperial Roman period. In the later period, Friday was dedicated to Aphrodite (for the Greeks) and Venus (for the Romans)

Prior to this the Greeks used a lunar-based calendar where different days of the month were devoted to different Gods and Goddesses and I would tend to think that the Romans would likely have used a similar system at first.
