The Sufi branch has produced very rich poetry and lives filled with spirit.

However, in its ecclesastical form it is far more draconian than any other religion and the disdain for art, literature, and other cultural factors is fairly evident. The Arabic peoples prior to Islam produced some of the greatest art and culture on the earth. Go to any museum that keeps Persian or Ottoman artficats and notice how the wealth of culture shuts down exactly when Islam shows up. As such, I view it as a very constricting and stangant way of relating to the divine and the rest of the world. And, frankly, it doesn't shock me that they are still producing their own inquisitions and crusades - if the West had crushed self-expression to that extent we'd be stuck in the dark ages too.

All that said, non-orthodox Muslims and American Muslims I know do not adhere to shariah law and demonstrate, I think, the potential in Islam which lies dormant as long as conservative, fundamentalist, and patriarchal cultures continue to prevent any advancements in the understand of what Allah has for their lives.

There is no other religion in the world that strikes such fear into the hearts of people who criticize it. Just ask Theo Van Gogh.

It's a medieval expansionist religion with a globalisation agenda and no place in Western Christian counties. It originated with the Moon God marrying the Sun Godess, now is that logical and reasonable? Mohammed married a six year old (Ayesha) when he was in his fifties but 'waited' until she was nine before consummating the marriage. If that isn't paedophilia I don't know what is. Then there's the permitted sexual activity literally translated as 'between the thighs'. This allows men to satisfy themselves sexually between the thighs of children. More paedophilia. The subjugation of women, the inheritance laws that favour sons to the detriment of the widow, barbaric sharia law, 'honour' killings, female genital mutilation, terrorist attacks on innocent civilians. None of these things have any place in the 21st century. This religion should be outlawed.

everyone is responsible for their own actions at end of the day..

It is a peaceful religion and it is a shame a minority have to ruin it (like in nearly all cultures and religions) by misinterperating and taking it too far.

It is a great religion with over a billion believers. Like most other religions it provides a moral compass to live your life under and to become a better person and find your path to Allah. That being said, there are those (a small, small minority) who have perverted it and attempt to use it to justify their hatred of others. As a Catholic, I find a few of the concepts different from tenets of my own beliefs, but that helps me understand mine better.

Without having read the Koran, attended Islamic services, and/or had serious discussions with practicing Muslims, I have nothing to say about Islam as a religion. I am sure it encompasses much more than the fantacism and suicide bombers that we see on the news,

They have a well deserved reputation from their violence and hostilities towards others. In this forum, they spend their time blaming their horrible reputation on others. Accusing them of not being able to read and observe.
