You can look at local service stations and garages that might offer this service. The only drawback is that not many actually will guarantee nor warranty the vehicle. You can do a self evaluation of the car to help give you a better understanding as well as 'weed' out vehicles with obvious problems.

I will give you a link to the free used car evaluation program. It has 7 checklists and a lot of copyrighted information you can use to help you find a vehicle. This isn't meant to replace a mechanic, however it can really help narrow the field.

You'll probably have to pay a mechanic something like 30-50 dollars to check it out for you.

Look in the yellow pages. there are companies out there that do just that. They are extremely thorough and complete with the inspection. Either that or just go to a garage and inquire with the manager. I'm sure they'll be happy to do the work to repair it, if they find something.

Ask around with neighbors, friends, co-workers, family or check some local ads and call a few places to see what they charge. Try to get references on the quality of their work.
