the toothache is so severe that i have shooting pains in my ear, i can only watch tv or be on the computer for as long as 30 minutes because of the light and i have a headache that is just sitting there. i have had a root canal before and i am suspecting it is the same thing, i cant afford to got to the, dentist right now so i need a pain killer that can sustain it until i can afford one. i am so broke right now i am scared the infection will spread and damage some nerves in my face. i have used Tylenol, Aleve, Excederin, and Ibuprofen but they are ineffective. please help me find a pain killer i cant sleep at night.

Seriously. First brush your teeth really well, ther germs in your mouth can seriously aggravate the nerve in the tooth. Then use orajel, they have the typical tube you would think of but they also have a small pack of Q-tip type sticks that have the Orajel already inside. Very convenient

It is common to have some soreness when a new tooth comes in, but a persistent tooth ache is usually a sign of something else. You could have an abscessed tooth. The pulp (center) of the tooth can become infected (due to a cavity or poor dental hygiene) and this can cause inflammation which results in a severe toothache. The infection has no where else to go within the tooth, so it can travel to the gum where it forms a bump. You need to see your dentist. If you have an abscessed tooth, an anti-inflammatory like Ibuprofen could temporarily help with the pain, but you will need antibiotics to clear up the infection. If there is a cavity, they need to repair that too. Never ignore a toothache especially if it is persistent or is getting worse.

Rachel, regardless of finances, you have to get that tooth taken care of. Whether you go to a community health clinic, a dental school or a private practice, that tooth must be addressed. If you simply follow the advice of some of the other well-intentioned (yet incorrect) people above by just using ambesol or aspirin, things could get much worse. The pain would be the least of your worries, as the tooth can become (if it isn't already) infected, and that infection can spread to the rest of your mouth. You don't want that.
Whether you find a free clinic or you borrow the money off of a friend, you MUST get to a dentist to have that addressed.

oh you poor thing, I've been in the same circumstances, I'm praying for you....I have found temporary relief by using an ORAGEL toothache gel, but Oragel for mouth ulcers will also work. Just rub it ALL over your gums around your tooth that hurts...also, a heating pad will help your pain ALOT...use it on low and if that is still to warm wrap your heating pad in a soft towel or cloth....I can't say for sure as I am no Dentist but I believe if your tooth is infected your jaw will definately start swelling before to long, if so you must go to a dentist/Dr. for antibiotics are you put yourself in danger of the infection spreading. First thing Monday you need to call ....family and children services in your county...it will be under Government in your phone book, tell them your problem and that you have no money maybe they can help you, if you have family ask for help, beg if necessary....as far as a pill to take...call around an see if any drugstore in your area has ...MOBIGESIC., it works great...its a older over the counter drug and sometimes hard to find , I get my pharmacy to order it for me...GoodLuck GodBless, DonnaG

I have been in the exact situation before. Try this... crush an aspirin and add a few drops of water to make a paste. Coat the tooth with it. The pain will subside enough for a day or two, but you will have to go to the dentist. :(

Find a dentist that will work out a payment plan with you. You've just listed all the over-the-counter drugs we could possibly offer you.
