Cults are created by false prophets, who are for some reasons, convinced that they are from God. For example Islam.

According to the dictionary definition of a cult all religions fall under the definition of cult.

Calling a religion a cult is a lot like calling a person a bastard, imo. Technically a person can be a bastard if they were born out of wedlock, however the only way that term is used now is as a deragotory term. Cult is meant to demean another religion when used, even if the dictionary definition fits.

Whenever someone calls my religion a cult, mormon, their only reason given is that the doctrine isnt traditional christianity, therefor its a cult. This makes NO sense whatsoever. If just changes in beliefs equals cult then I get to consider their religion a cult, too. It is just a cheap shot against another persons beliefs.

I bet most people that claim others are cults dont really have a clue about that other religion, their way of worship, or the way they really live their lives and believe.

A religion and a cult are the exact same thing. People who like a cult call it a religion, people who don't like it call it a cult.

I blame the media for the bastardization of the word "cult." They needed some word to describe a religion that doesn't have a large consumer base, since they'd get whined at if they referred to these religions as religions.

The real world difference? If it's a huge voting block, it's a religion, if it doesn't, it's called a cult...

Remember Jonestown in South Africa? That was supposedly a religion but was really a cult. Over 13,00 people died men, women and children. There was also the story about the people in this church who all killed themselves and they wore purple sneakers and had purple blankets over them because they believed the end of the world was coming and they thought the aliens would take their dead bodies away. I don't remember the name of that cult. Cults are basically sick sadistic people who are in it for money and power. The leaders usually were abused either physically, or sexually by their parents or neglected and they want to become the center of attention.

think of a worldwide the place the God of the Bible made it impossible to reject Him. that's genuinely what all religions are, a rejection of God. concerns little if it incredibly is Islam, Catholicism, or paganism. Throw in Protestantism too by way of fact a good number of what's taught there is the product guy's desires, no longer God's. So we've not have been given any determination yet to worship this God. yet isn't worship an act of adoration? of love? How will we incredibly love God if we've not have been given any determination interior the priority? What fee could our love be to Him? and how could we take exhilaration in God's love in return? Or rationalize it. the only way for God to coach His love for us is to enable us to decide for Him or reject Him. He provides us a life-time to make that determination. And He provides us each and every of the info we could make the excellent determination. the place we fail is in no longer beginning our hearts and our minds to the single actual God. We take the hearsay of a preacher or priest or the owner of a few web site by way of fact the gospel certainty. Paul praised the Berean's by way of fact they studied the Scriptures daily to substantiate each and every little thing he advised them (Acts 17:11). Few take God heavily adequate to try this. tremendously frightening thinking our eternal destinies carry interior the stability.

One of the big ones is that cults try to keep their members isolated from other beliefs and won't let them associate with anybody except other members of the cult.

A cult is when they put false beliefs in people heads, yes it can be brainwashing, but when a group comes together to worship something false, or when they change Gods word, they are writing thier own rules, making thier own laws, there are many, many believe that the LDS, would be a cult, because a person came and claimed to be a prophet and his teachings were wrong, and him and his family changed The Holy Bible, we are not to add or change the Bible, and that is in The Bible.

Sorry, no name-calling on a public forum. You want to stir up debate to watch the fur fly. I'm not gonna play. There's far too much of that on R & S as it is.

And as an ex-cult member, I could. I choose not to.
