I have a nephew (10 years old) who is over the moon after having received a copy of the Dangerous book for Boys. Last year I sent him a compass and a magifying glass and he already has a penknife - what might be this year (as he says) the "absolute essentials" that he might like as a Xmas present ?
thank you for your help - I do not have children and my nephew and niece live overseas so I only see them once every 2 or 3 years.

Maybe a really good torch? Either one of the little LED ones that's really bright, or an indestructible waterproof type one. Or a little multitool - bit similar to a penknife maybe, but I have one with lots of different screwdrivers in that has been so useful! Karabiner clips may not sound very exciting, but in my experience young boys can think of almost endless things to do with them. Most good outdoors shops have a big range of survival accessories. Or see if there are any of the projects in the book that he's been wanting to try but doesn't have what he needs for them.
I love some of the accessories on this site:

What about a magazine to something like Popular Mechanics for Kids (not sure on if this is old enough for that age) but along the lines. Also check out the Discovery Channel toy store, has good enginneering type toys and others like you listed.
