I tried updating with BOTH cable and DSL. When I first got it, I had to leave it on for 4 hours so I could play COD (firmware update was required).

Because japanese, american and european consoles have slight differences. Japanese has to get an update for japanese PS3 and so long. Your PS3 had to connect to japanese server - that's why it took you so long.

if you are using wireless then thats why

it takes longer for wireless
