I have been told that it is illegal, but my car just passed its MOT with one on (after the new regulations were introduced), so I wondered if this was incorrect.

yes it now is
Registration Number Plates
New checks have been introduced to the MOT Test to ensure the registration plate confirms to the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001.

These checks will now confirm the following:

The characters and background colour comply with regulations
The character font is an a correct type
The characters are the correct size as is the size of the margin
The plates are fitted vertically
The non-reflective border is within the permitted width
Finally an unacceptable symbol or flag, such as football team crests or logo, is not displayed.
Also for vehicles registered on or after 1 September 2001 ( i.e 51 plates and later ) the additional checks will also be performed:

It displays the BSAU 145d marking
It also displays the name and postcode of the registration plate supplier
It does not display a honeycomb or similar effect background.

There are all new laws just come out for licence plates, the DVLA are even saying some personal reg's will be illegal, bit much really when you have paid thousands for them.especially as the DVLA were selling them too.

New MOT regulations which came in last month (1st Oct 2007) means number plates have to have British Standard mark and the name and postcode of the plate supplier.

The new rules for registration plates is available at any mot station and if you ask they will give you all the details.
I am told you cannot have any emblem but have yet to check myself.

I refuse to have the EC flag on my car so I have a union Jack to cover it. As long as it does not cover the registration mark you are OK in UK anyway

Where I live it is illegal. You must have the EU flag on your plates. You can fail an NCT if you do not. That said, most cops don't really care that much about such things. They only tend to crack down on things like that if they suspect the car is unroadworthy,or if the owner is being a nuisance or driving like an idiot.

presumably you are in the UK. Yes it's fine to have a shield there, a monogram, whatever you want really as long as the number plate size and lettering size all complies with the law.
