It's not that churches "want" it so badly for themselves....
The churches need it to further the word of God. So that others can hear and learn the Gospel.
And yes, money is the root of all evil if you let it get to your head. To where that's all you think about, and all you strive for. Letting it get between family relationships, friendships, and many other things. Thinking that you've always got to have more, and that you can never have enough. That you'll do anything to get it. That's when it starts controlling your life...

Get it right, it is for the LOVE of money is the root of all evil.

This means when you love money so much you'll do anything to obtain it, meaning stealing, lying, and all other misdeeds.

Churches are no different than individuals, they need money to keep the lights on, to pay the mortgage, to pay for heat, etc... If you can get these creditors to stop charging the Churches for their services AND people would pitch in and volunteer their money to fix the roof or the plumbing and feed the poor, I'm sure the Churches would stop asking.

Everything costs money. The church does not sell a product to profit from, so of course they need donations. I go to the Salvation Army church and they do a lot of event for the communtiy and area homeless. They have fundraisers all the time. They say money is the root of all evil because some people will do anything to get it. Even evil things.

Damn good question. Sure it costs money to run a church. So why do we need churches? What's wrong with a beautiful place in nature? Put your coats on congregation and get close to God. He's not interested in fancy stained glass windows.
It's religion that's the problem - too many men looking for power and status.
God is everywhere around and within you and you sure as hell (oops:-) ) don't need to go into a big flashy building to get close to him or listen to some guy in a long black dress quoting nonsense rules from a book. Go outside, feel the warmth of Father Sun, put your bare feet on Mother Earth, smile at a passing rabbit and know that you can feel the love of God every minute of the day all by yourself.

It is simple really, but it is like this. Everybody needs money, try ringing up the Electricity or Gas Company etc, and saying, "We are a Church, we have no money, but just keep on giving us Power and Heat" Then come back and tell us what they said to you. Churches Send vast sums of Money raised to help the poor and needy both at home, and in many Countries, around the World. Why not call into your Local Church and ask for a copy of their financial reports, and then see what is raised, and spent. Then you may be in a better position to inform us what the answer to your question is.

The love of money is the root of all evil. Greed has taken many a man and a Church down....Look at what is happening with Oral Roberts University...I don't know if they took money for their own use,,,but it sure looks like it...they may go the way of PTL....but it isn't just the Churches....a lot of companies bit the dust because of Greedy CEOs...

I'm a Christian and I know most churches are not at all like that...they just want to be able to keep their church afloat,,,,but I do not defend these big Mega Churches where Greed gets the best of those at the top....there are bad and good in all organizations....look at what the Red Cross did after the Hurricane,,,took money for themselves that was meant for the Gulf Coast....Don't just pick on Churches...

Often misquoted as 'money is the root of all evil'. Originates in the Bible, Timothy 6:10 (King James Version):

For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

I believe the lack of money and resources is the "main" root of all evil.

Churches are in a way like businesses, and they need the funds to maintain their services, as well as the maintenance of the building itself, along with any employees on the church payroll.

Money is not the root of all evil, the love of money is.
The buildings people call a church needs money for the upkeep of the buildings, keep the lights on and heat/air conditioning going and to pay the pastor.
The people that run buildings go to old testament law to get money.

Misquote on your part. It says that LOVE of money is the root of all evil, not money itself. Christians are called to put God above finances, and to trust God to provide for them. I see this happening all the time, God always provides. The church I am in teaches what the Bible says about giving. There are many many Bible verses about money and giving, it was an important thing to God as He knows us, and He knows that those of us who are hung up on hoarding money or possessions, or who will work to get more money at the cost of having a family life, will be spiritually all the poorer for it. There is a saying, 'you cannot out-give God' .
