The squish test usually works for a suspected wet - you either feel crunchy/dry/flat or soft/full/squishy.
The sniff test, although somewhat accurate, isn't usually a good idea with my kids (phew!). Sometimes the diaper doesn't stink when they're wet (or even poopy, with newborns) and why put yourself through that olfactory experience when it could be avoided? Sometimes the smell will find you even when you aren't looking for it, and that is enough!
Another indication: baby is screaming while simultaneously kicking both legs frantically as if to say "GET IT OFF!"
If the child is old enough they may chase you around the house saying, "Mommy, I stinky! I poopy, Mommy! Change my bopper!" When my toddler does this I tend to run from him and hide until his father changes the offending stink bomb. Hopefully this toddler will start using the potty on his own soon.
If you suspect that someone *else's* child may be poopy, please don't pull out the waistband of their diaper to look down there for poop. My sister-in-law did this and got someone else's kid's poop on her finger. EEUW!
To avoid diaper rash, change often - never leave a soiled diaper on a baby for a long time - diaper rash hurts and can get infected.

I used to lift a small area of the diaper near the bottom to check it. I usually could tell if it needed changing if it seemed saturated there. The other way I could tell if the diaper needed to be changed was if I could smell something and I wasn't near the child.

If I think I smell something, I'll pull the back waistband of his diaper out just slightly and give it a good sniff, lol. If he's wet, I can usually tell because the front of his diaper looks puffy.

Usually by smell. However, my sense of smell isn't as good as my husbands. Sometimes I have to look from the top of the diaper (or if he is wearing onsies I will look from the side). But usually smell is the most accurate.

sort of a Debate in my homestead... Im many times cleansing and organizing the a good number of messes interior the homestead.. My Husband does not opt to bathe.. So I make him exchange our infant's diaper when I cant do it. The question continually is " do you opt to bathe the dishes,do laundry, vacuum, get the tub waiting and organize the sparkling clothing? or could you opt to shield the baby whilst Im busy? " HAHA (: humorous how Im continually the single making each and every little thing function, i do no longer even opt to think of what my son could appear like, What our homestead could appear like if I wasn't around! certainty is, tell your better half to shield your infant for a pair of days Diaper changing and all. he's only being lazy..

well first off u can usually tell by one the look of the diper, 2 if theres a smell 3 lifting the back of the diper from the back a bit to see if there is anything 4 just change them regulary, then you dont have to worry about checking them or the child getting infections from sitting in a wet or dirty diper

It would depend on what you are checking for, if you are checking for wet, then a finger run inside the leg opening will usually let you know. If I'm looking for the other stuff, then I just pull out the back of the waistband and look (as well as sniff) and it is pretty obvious.
Good luck.

well if they pooed you can smell it without looking just peer in the back of the diaper to make sure it wasnt just a stinky fart. pinch the top rim of the diaper in back and pull it back enough to peer in. (if they did poop you dont want it on your fingures lol.)
and if its pee you can feel it from the outside of the diaper when your holding the baby. (its gel beeds in the diaper that hold the pee away from the baby and you can easily tell the difforence between dry diaper and wet diaper.

Smell first then feel. You'll know right away if the diaper is poopie. You can look at it and tell if it's wet, it will be a little saggy.
