Ginam got it all right. But to be honest, although "poêle" and "fourneau" are translations of "stove", none of them are used nowadays as what Americans call kitchen stoves.

"le poêle" is the old wood-burning or gas stove that people used to have as a heating system. Cooking could be done on some of them but I have only seen those in castles' 19th century kitchens! Careful also, in the feminine it has a different meaning: "la poêle" is the frying pan.

"le fourneau" is a very dated word, I don't even think my grandmother still used it.

So in modern French, what you cook with in the kitchen is
"la cuisinière" including the burners + the oven ("le four")
but if you are talking about the top part only, excluding the oven, we would say "les plaques de cuisson" (= the burners).

Now I am talking about French from France. It may be different in Canada or elsewhere, I don't know.

Just an observation rather than a complete list - le poêle is fine for a stove, but whoever marked Angelic down for using "le" and thought that la poêle was right ought to feel humiliated - la poêle is a frying pan. Notice I haven't marked any of you down; but don't be so quick to criticise in future - please ☺
