Last night. He told me that we, the Christians have 'blinders' on just like they used to use on a horse. That what we 'see' is distorted by these blinders. That these spiritual blinders could be removed if we prayed for God to remove them, but in our 'blindness' we never considered to ask him to remove the spiritual blinders that we have on. When I tried to explain this to my wife she could not understand, so an example I used was this. I have a aunt who has a 33 year old son, who will do nothing but drink and spend her money. every time something bad happens, its someones Else fault. He cant help it, at least this is what she says. She is spiritual blinded by the truth. we can see the real problem, and we can see her trying to solve the problem in every way but a good swift kick to the behind, which would do the trick. But in her 'mind' she is 100% cccorrect. that is the way I seen the blinders on us, we are 100% correct in what our problems are, but in fact we are most likely way off base. But the good news is God want to help us remove these blinders if we will let him.

Never. God does not speak to people who do not have serious mental disorders.

Here in the mid-west mental disorders in the general population can run as high as 60%, no wonder this area is known as the Bible-Belt.

Religious schizophrenics less likely to seek help:

"Temporal Lobe Epilepsy disorder has been linked to extreme religious experiences. Patients who have TLE may have sudden and dramatic spiritual changes. There are many instances of these patients converting from agnostic or atheist beliefs to strongly active religious faiths. TLE causes abnormal electrical activity in their temporal regions and has been directly linked to these radical changes in religious belief and personality changes. Curiously, religious chanting and meditation reduce the activity of frontal lobe activity, which heightens Temporal Lobe activity. Further research in this area has uncovered that electrical stimulation of areas in the Temporal Lobe also produce these spiritual experiences. The electrical stimulation caused the control group to report feelings of “well being” euphoria and a feeling of a “presence”.
from : "Religion is a Mental Illness," by D Surman

For bipolar disorder (manic depression) religion often plays a distinct role in their lives. Some have faced severe misunderstandings, judgment, and even accusations of demon possession.

Just do a search on "mental disorder + religion." I got over two hundred and fifty thousand hits.

J Lu - Are you real sure its not all the same thing ? You may be missing my point. My comments aren’t about 'the voices in someone’s head,' they're about how religion and mental disorders affect and exacerbate each other. And, there's also the aspect that a person can have a mental disorder and still be socially functional depending on the severity of the disorder. No one's 100% and having conversations with unsubstantiated entities is a good indicator that a check up is in order.
