When I make Christmas Puddings, I usually steam them, this year I'm wondering if it makes much difference if they're cooked in the microwave. I've got one mixed up, just waiting for the family to give it a final stir and make their wishes, any advice please. Which do you prefer?

Steam it initially and microwave it on the day. It frees up a place on the top of the stove. An alternative is to pop it in a slow cooker. You'll still have room to make the gravy, apple and bread sauce and cook the sprouts!

I use a recipe that makes a number of puds, so I steam first as I get several in the pan at one time and I think that gives a better result. But then the individual puds are usually microwaved to reheat on the day. I recommend 10 mins on high but checking by inserting a skewer or knife for a minute or two - if it comes out very hot, the pud is ready. Let it stand for 10 mins while you organise the brandy.....

If you have the time steamed is far superior, but if like many people you are pushed for time the microwave 1s are pretty good too. I do believe the steamed puddings stored properly have a better shelf life. Do make sure you store them either in the refridgerator or the freezer if wanting to keep for a longer period. Good luck And a very Happy Christmas to you and yours.

I prefer to steam them the old-fashioned way. Microwaving does tend to over cook Christmas puddings, in my opinion.

I have never made a Christmas pudding in the mw but last year we were given one to mw and I found it turned out well.
It wasn't as good the following day when I reheated the other half.

Well my mum has always done them in the microwave and they have tasted delicious to me! I'm not sure that it matters much. Make too and test both...then you will know for sure!

M/W ovens have a weird effect on bread and bakery products... they get tough. I think I'd stick w/ traditional steaming.

you should always factor in the conventional oven temp but also round down by like a 5- 10 mins
