In the US or worldwide? I don't have stats handy but in the US I will guess non-denominational Christians. Worldwide I think Roman Catholics and Sunni Muslims are very close. I think Hindus and Buddhists are not far behind. Not sure about atheists. If there are a billion atheists in China alone, maybe they are the largest religious group.

I think the biggest group would actually be the Catholics.
My recollection is that there is about 1.3 billion Catholics.

If you are going to break up the main blocks, then it is only fair that you would sub-divide the atheists, agnostics, secularists, humanists etc. which would pull us from that #2 spot.
But then I had not realized that reality was a popularity contest where the biggest set of believers (or non believers) got to decide what was real. It does not matter whether 7 billion people's thinking agrees with the real world or if it is only 7. Reality is what it is and faith can not change it.

Practicing or non-practicing? Cause the catholics claim the highest membership, but they are including members that haven't attended church except for christmas and easter their entire lives, and they are including people that have converted to other religions that once belonged to their church.
record keeping is too inaccurate in most churches to have any accurate number.
I do find, however, that there are not as many atheists in the world as the atheists would have us think.

speaking as a Jew (of sorts) I would guess that the Jews would have the largest number of sects, because you can have two Jews and three opinions---the largest religion is Christianity, numerically, but some of us do not believe that others are , uh, us...then Islam...but as far as the various opinions and belief structures go, the Jews win easily...all of us have at least one, sometimes two or three...

sorry, you don't get to call "nondenominational Christians" a single denomination =)
Catholic (1.1 billion) followed by Sunni (1.0 billion) and Eastern Orthodox a distant third (225 million)

Roman Catholics by a huge margin. I don't even think your two groups would make the top 5.

there is really no telling man, people have spent centuries splitting themselves apart, when religion should really serve to bring us all together...its a sad state of affairs really, the human race is an abomination
