I used to do them and I was able to not only burn fat, but built up my muscles. However, I also did a lot of walking..power walking to be exact. Wish I could do them again but my herniated disc prevents it..but I would go for it if I were you.

Building muscle burns fat, but crunches mostly make your core stronger. It is important to have a strong core, not only for your abdomen to look good and strong, but it helps keep your body erect. (great for your posture) You have to balance out a core work out between the abdominal muscles and the erector muscles of the spine. Just remember in strength training when you work one group of muscles you need to also work the opposite ones. ie biceps then triceps etc. a great article is : "Super Abs Resource Manual" by Len Kravitz, Ph.D.

They strengthen your whole core, but they don't burn fat. You'll need to do more than sit-ups if you're looking for a 6 pack.

they burn a little fat, they add some muscle, they tone the muscle (d). actually crunches are probably better because they put less stress on your lower back.

what do you think? do one and you'll feel that your abdominal muscles contracting... the more you do, the more they will get ripped... but you'll have to shed your fat belly before you can see your six pack. Drop down and give me 50 sit ups now!
