I am a dog lover. I have heard that several religions either ban or restrict having a dog in the home as a pet. Can anyone provide reliable info? Can Jews have a dog as a pet? What about Muslims? Orthodox Christians?

What if the dog is a St. Bernard? Is there some kind of loophole?

Many Jews....even some Orthodox Jews have dogs...there is no prohibition. That said, there are many laws concerning the keeping of animals that many Orthodox Jews simply don't want to deal with on a daily basis....so they don't.

Muslims, it is my understanding, do not.

Christians do.

As a Christian for over 37 yrs. I have not heard of any such thing, The bible does speak how a dog will return unto his vomit. But it does not say we can not have any. I have 2 myself, One is a inside Dog & the other is a outside dog, Plus I have about 15 cats outside. My inside dog Is a house pet, & my outside dog is fenced in with a very big place to move since I live out in the country, His dog house in the winter has a little electric blanket it can sleep on inside his doghouse. plus a water bowl that keeps his water from freezing.

Oh, my goodness. I must admit I'd never heard of this restriction. And I am very much an orthodox (small "o") Catholic. While I type this, a dear elderly dachshund is napping nearby ... and we've had many canine companions, large and small, over the years. As far as I'm concerned, they're among the nicest of God's creations.

Muslims are not supposed to.

I am a fellow dog-lover. To the core. Our Lhasa Apso (although she is Buddhist) is the light of my life.
