Paul declares, “We preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Greeks” (1 Cor. 1:23). He also writes, “The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him” (1 Cor. 2:14).

Gravy, Paul asks, “Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?” (1 Cor. 1:20).

mommy, YOU'RE right! That would be a good start.
Thank God, he opened "our" eyes to see his wisdom and our foolishness. God granted us faith to believe in the “foolishness” of the gospel, thus enabling us to be saved forever.

robin the rotten,
Does THIS make perfect sense?
For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. (19) For it is written, "I WILL DESTROY THE WISDOM OF THE WISE, AND THE CLEVERNESS OF THE CLEVER I WILL SET ASIDE."

'He who has an ear let him hear what the Spirit of the Lord is saying'. 'The Spirit wars against the flesh and the flesh against the Spirit'. 'The knowledge of God is the BEGINNING of all understanding'.

In other words one must be able to give up importance of self and be directed mainly by the Spirit of Truth that Jesus portrayed-a higher dimension where goodness counts vs greed.

What I don't understand is why non-believers put so much effort into attacking believers in God, & Jesus.
Do you think some words have been misinterpreted in the translation of the bible? The basic premise is there. The Bible was written about events that happened over 2000 years ago. Language was different. And then try to translate that language.
I am sorry you do not believe. Do you think your passion for bashing Christians is fueled by the Devil? Pray for Jesus to come into your heart. I know I will.

It's obvious -- the damn thing makes no sense. It's irrational, it IS foolishness. The reason that's spelled out right in the book is to give believers something to hang on to. When it's clear that they are pretending to believe a bunch of hogwash they can't possibly really believe, that sort of double-talk is just the thing to make them feel superior to those who actually use their heads and are honest about what they believe.

For people who have to try to pretend to believe that grass grew before the sun existed, and that the earth stopped spinning for several hours one day, and that all people deserve eternal horror and suffering for the crime of existing, and that punishing an innocent person can 'wash away' the offenses of third parties.... what else can you do but say 'Well, it's foolishness to those who are not totally committed to the delusion."

In other words, as I frequently hear from bible-believers when I point out that it is really not possible to believe everything in the bible and still be honest...

"Hey, I believe everything in the Bible! Everything except the words and sentences."

18For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19For it is written:
"I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;
the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate."[c]
20Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

I cant say it any better.

Up until a few thousand years ago, god kept his great salvation secret from the rest of the world...why? Just to be mean? I mean really, hundreds of thousands of years of people burn in hell waiting for satellite communication and greedy preachers to spread the world. Does that make sense? If he really created everything, couldn't he have somehow gotten the word to the Chinese before the 17 century? Face it, christianinsanity is a local superstition gone global with the advent of mass communication and commerce. It survives because it teaches some effective social strategies, but grand old white guy with beard and a harp? Get over it.

I don't know if that's entirely true. I think all people can understand the words--God doesn't blur the words while their reading or thinking about them. It's more a matter of them not agreeing with the conclusions.

Edit: not to be contentious but the verse you quoted doesn't prove the point you're making. That verse talks about the fact that Christians were not chosen for any lovely characteristic in them.

Actually it does make sense to some outside of Him. Those are the ones who are drawn to the light on the hill. Others are not drawn to that light because they are attempting to live their lives through their own wisdom. So it has NOTHING to do with the Word of God. The Word of God is sharper than a two edged sword able to separate bone and marrow. It has EVERYTHING to do with the receptiveness of the heart of the one who is presented with the word. The parable of the sower speaks to this issue. The sower sows the seed on ALL types of soil. Some soil is rich and fertile so the seed germinates, takes hold, and grows richly. Other seed falls on the beaten down path. The path is so hard and impermeable that the seed never even has a chance to germinate. The birds come and eat it. So it makes sense to some outside the fellowship and they are drawn into that fellowship. To those with a hard heart they are not capable of understanding the richness of the Word.

The Bible is not just another book. It is Holy Scripture, written by those who were inspired by the Holy Spirit, and not merely by what they themselves willed to be written (2 Peter 1:20-21)

It must be read and interpreted in that same way. People who attempt to do otherwise can easily twist, distort and misinterpret, either unintentionally or willfully. (2 Peter 2:1-3)

Satan can take many forms and guises - he can even appear as an "angel of light" according to Scripture.

The word of God is not written in the scriptures as they have you believe. God did not write, men wrote to control the masses using religions and religious stories. You can have fellowship with God and not believe in "the Word". That's why those of us with open eyes, open minds and free thinking, "the Word of God" does not make sense. The "word of God" is all around us everyday and the universe.

Why is it that only really intelligent people can see the Emperor's new clothes?

A load of bible quotes saying how only wise people understand the bible is a circular argument and not worth the paper it is written on. It is only valid for sheep who do not want to learn to think for themselves.
