Is it a convenient way to put the fear of God in them? When they ask why Noah had an ark with all of the animals, the parent then says, "because God flooded the earth once and even though he promised not to do it again, he is still going to destroy the planet and only take good little Christian boys and girls with him to heaven"?

The animals and rainbow make it all very cute and appealing, but why exposed a child to this story?

Well, unfortunetly, parents aren't always as smart or even as knowlegable as they should be.
I feel that if you are going to expose your child to such stories, that you have the responsibility and correct information in order to explain to them the story.
We forget, the bible gives us stories not to take literally, but to read and understand the points the stories are trying to make.
(In my opinion od course)

"because God flooded the earth once and even though he promised not to do it again, he is still going to destroy the planet and only take good little Christian boys and girls with him to heaven"?

Sounds like a very lazy parent that should be smacked across the face 10 times over.
In my opinion, if there is a parent out there giving explanations like this to their children, chances are that they are giving their children bogus information about everything else in life. And there is absolutely NOTHING we can do about stupid parents but to make sure that we don't make the same stupid mistakes.
To me parents who would feel ok with giving their child an answer like that would be same kind of parent that allows un-controlled cable to babysit their kids.
Luckily for parents, it isn't illegal to be a stupid parent.

The Noah's ark story never made me feel afraid. I've always known that God loves me and keeps His promises.

Why would anyone buy their kid a Noah's Ark toy?

Dang! can't the parents just bought it because it's cute?

Yeah, I saw that on the store shelf too. Right next to the Vampire, Monster and War toys.

I would rather buy something of faith for my child than to build fear of Vampires and monsters.

Why take children to funerals? To get them used to the reality of death and dying so that they will be prepared for it.
The reality of God's judgment and the possibility of God's judgment on the earth is part of life.. Children need to learn the reality of that.

I was told that story when I was a kid, and it didn't scar me for life. I do dress up like a chupacabra and walk up to fast food drive-ins asking for rare hamburger, hold the buns, but that's the worst of it.

I cried when I first heard the story.

I think I was about 7 years old... "But moommm *sniff* what if the world isn't good enough now? People make fun of me all the time! What if God does it again?!"

So they can understand that there are penalties for our actions. even your disbelieve will be irrelevant when that day comes, due to the fact that you knew better, but chose to follow a different course.
