I'm only asking because I must say I'm pretty surprised at how many time the word "comfort" showed up in my last question.

No offense intended, I'm really just curious.

Not for me.

I guess I'm different from those answerers, because if I didn't believe in God, I doubt I would be as motivated as I am to learn, analyze, and try to hellp people.

My belief gets me out into the world. If I weren't a believer, I could see myself weighing 300lbs, sitting on the couch, watching reruns of Gilligan's Island and eating Taco Bell all day long.

(I don't imply that all non-believers are like that. Just that I prolly would be.)

Some people pray some meditate, and we can't be sure he doesn't exist. After a couple of out of body experiences I have come to the realization that there is more to life than we know. I went to Catholic School and although I don't think I have ever seen either of my parents pray, I have always prayed to God since I was a child. I don't find it as strange as some people might, but I just feel like he is there to comfort us when we need it. Having some amazing things happen to me in my life I feel it is God touching my life through others. I know one thing, my faith gives me hope for a better tomorrow. I know it sounds absurd to some and some people liken God to Santa Claus and all of that but in my heart I just know he is real.

Comfort? Wow, ask a person that lives in an Islamic family what kind of comfort they got when they asked Jesus to be their Lord.

You can talk about "GOD" all day long but the minute you talk about "Jesus" then you really see people squirm in the chair.

Now if you mean "comfort" as to a state of mind to explain things that many can not or do not want to face...Hmmm...maybe so. For me? I have a comfort in knowing that God loved, and still loves, ME so much, He made the sacrifice that He did for me. THAT kinda' love gives me lotsa' comfort. Do ya' wanna' try some?

God Bless.

No because God is not always comforting as he sometimes answers your prayers no and in the old testament God was done right angry with man. How ever if you believe and follow the doctrine you will find comfort in knowing God and his expectations for you and comfort in believing in an afterlife. Martha

Uh, your question asked if that was PART of the appeal, not "is this the only reason you believe."

If you want to know WHY believers believe, then ask that, and you'll have your answers. (Most say things like experiencing god; or that there's no other way to explain everything.)

If you ask whether people find comfort in their belief, of course you're going to get a lot of people who say they do, as that's one of the benefits. That's not the same as saying that's what their belief "comes down to."

(BTW, I'm an atheist.)

Seekers of truth do not seek comfort. Comfort requires one to plant their head in the ground and live according to their mantra: see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.
The truth is not comfortable and not worn like a favorite childhood blanket. The truth eats you alive inside. No wonder so few people pursue truth. The more truth eats you , the closer you become to being totally free. I am my comfort and I love the truth which I am a diligent seeker of.

call it comfort or relaxation as other people answered to your question but it is to remember that anthropologically speaking there is a proof that God has is and always will be present all humanity. All cultures, civilizations, eras, societies, etc have come to believe in the "transcendental superior being". All humans have.... and will believe in something more powerful than them... call it "sense of belonging" or in other words..comfort

I personally don't see it as comfort, but more for the reason that I think God exists, based on my experiences (i.e. prayer) as well as studying sciences such as astronomy, biology, chemistry, evolution, physics, etc. From what I understand, on the most basic levels, nature is very well organized, and this order that I see in the Universe inclines me to believe there is a Creator.

Out of all of your answers I only seen a few who actually used the word comfort but anyhow, for me, yes He gives me comfort but He also gives me strength, wisdom, guidance, patience, and understanding. That doesn't sum it up as to what God comes down to in my life, but as you can see there is so much more.

I think that the essence and spirit of God is truly comforting in nature. There is a peace/euphoria in the presence of Holiness/sanctity. That is why so many use the word comfort. He blankets us with grace in times of need. Grace is comforting.
