Wouldn't it make more sense to have a book written in plain english.. (god knows all, he knew the united states would be 70% Xian)...that clearly stated every aspect of life, rather than using any sort of allegory, or ambiguous thoughts that could be translated 100 different ways?

Also, why do people argue that the parts that ARE straighforward aren't serious?

I heard on a show about Nostradamus that all prophets speak ambiguously so their predictions can fit some future event.

I was wondering why I hadn't seen any questions from you in my morning mail...you are a bit late today as far as stirring up shat goes...

Believe it or not, the Bible makes more sense the more you read it, but parts of it will never make sense. This is because we read and think in English, a precise, Germanic language with about 400,000 words, while these books were written in Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, translated into Latin, then other languages---most of the languages that were translated into the Bible had vocabularies of fewer than 5000 words, and many words had multiple meanings, and the storytelling style was majorly metaphorical.

Another explaination might be that it is all bullshat, and I have invested a lot of time and love in being a Christian, so I naturally do not want this to be true. But I know that the possibility exists that I am totally on the wrong track...

Scripture was Not just written in Hebrew as one has answered, it was written in several languages as there were several different Human authors from several countries. Fact is that Scripture Must be Diligently Studied in the Original Language in which it was written. This has (thank God) been done for Us! The results can be found in many good Bible Handbooks, Various Translations and Help Books which tell Us Exactly what each word means with regards to the culture, time & context in which it was written! But Wait! There's more! Christ left Us the Holy Spirit Indwelling each Believer Priest so that He will show Us the Meaning of Scripture! John

I think you should spend a little more time reading history. Thats how literature was composed in King james' time. Elizabethian English was the correct term if I'm not mistaken. It may have been a little less common to hear people speaking like that on the street. But all the all the literature of the time was written to be artistic and fluid, musical almost. It was a life calling to translate the Bible. They wanted it to be perfect. and... it was... There are newer translations availible though NIV.. Living bible... and study bibles that break everything down in modern english

I asked a question with a similar thought process behind it just the other day. I wish the whole thing had been simplified to a couple of tablets. Something everyone can understand. Now, there's so much room for interpretation it's hard to know for sure who's right!!

It must be some kind of test, to see who can see through all the muddle to get the clear picture.... very confusing!!

It is because those that want our faith to be sustained by it have been using SUBJECTIVE REALISM. That is the same thing used by fortune tellers, astrologers, and so-called "prophets" for thousands of years. Our egos determine that the whole of existence is centered around us, therefore we take the slightest resemblance to us and make it fact in our minds just to feel our sense of self-worth rise. The true realist has the sense to know that this is what is happening, but it still happens so it's best to just practice mental control and laugh at the notion of our own importance as mere specks in the omnipotent glory of this Universe.

Well it was first written in Hebrew and Greek... Because those were the languages back then.

And now there are many different translations that have been made easy to understand. It has the same message, just written in words that make sense to us.

I Corinthians 2:14 is the answer. You must be born again. Until then the Bible is viewed without the author and you will never understand it's depths or it's riches. "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." The bible is metaphorically referred to as food, it is the bread of life, but also has "meat". (Hebrews) just as some food is simpler to digest, other's are more difficult, nonetheless it requires a body and that body is spiritual, until you, me or anyone is re-born spiritually we can never benefit from it nor understand it.

English didn't exist back then. It was written in Hebrew, which is a much deeper language. One word can have so many meanings. Same with the Greek.
The translators I'm sure had issues with the languages.

Well it's 2000 years old. They didn't speak English then. LOL
And to answer your question why do people have to be so damn literal? ALL religion is ambiguous.
