Because a lack of evidence is a sensible and logical reason for not accepting something.

While belief is based on faith which is neither sensible nor logical.

But I also don't see the two at odds unless people go out of their way to put the two at odds. This is essentially the story of my family.

I don't believe and don't try to convince anyone else they are wrong or shouldn't believe.

My sister is religious doesn't try to convince anyone else they are wrong or should believe.

My mother can't stand anyone not believing strongly and will approach total strangers and confront them for not being 'Christian enough'. My mother doesn't feel either me or my sister are right. To her it's a war. She wants the pot stirred. She can't stand believers and non believers agreeing on anything.

because you're predisposed to the atheist's opinion....therefore it makes more sense to you. If you had a predilection towards religion, you would more likely favor the christian explanation.....or more likely, never would have asked the question as the answer would have been obvious.

Nobody can answer this for you. When you are approached or find a theology that matches your personal beliefs and thoughts you will know it. Read the below web-page (if you wish).
