When a young man, I always found a lover that was a native language speaker to assist me with my language skills. That is how I learned Romanian, Korean, Japanese & Spanish. You should at least make a friend that is a native of Canada to assist you in perfecting your language skills. Don't worry about making mistakes, because everyone makes a few when learning a new language. Things just seldom translate exactally as you think they should. I once tried to ask for a light for my cigarette in Romanian & asked for sex... that was embarressing.
Canada is much like the US, in that they respect those trying to speak their language.

I have 2 Bosnian friends who speak horrible English, Bosniak males must have the most trouble speaking English properly since the women seem to speak it perfectly for some reason. Not being offensive I love Bosnians but it is true. I suggest. If you lived where I live I would encourage you to take classes to learn the local accent.
I don't know about Canada but in the US we don't make fun of people who try to learn English since many immigrants here don't even bother trying so you would gain a lot of respect here. Good luck

My husband came to the states years ago from Hungary. He always says that it takes at least 5 years of living somewhere to pick up the language good enough. He has lived in many different countries so i think he knows something about it.
he used to watch childrens TV shows to pick up some words in English. They use simple words and talk slower so it is easier to learn. The tapes ect. didn't really work well for him.
Maybe you can find a language club where other people also want to practice their language skills.Don't be too hard on yourself, it takes time.I am trying to learn hungarian myself,I know it isn't easy.

I am studying Spanish by myself. I have found that watching movies with the foreign language subtitles on can be helpful. I can compare the translations and get experience in seeing how the languages compare. It's good for vocabulary, too.
Look for other opportunities that give both languages at one time -- directions, bilingual websites. Go to www.about.com and see if they offer free daily lessons in English. I know they do in Spanish.
Best wishes and thank you for learning our language.

Tatiana, listen don't ever be ashamed if you are trying to better yourself. People that understand will respect you for trying and will help you. Embarrass yourself if what you are doing is wrong. Good luck and write me to see how you are doing. Good luck from the land of the free....AMERICA.

You might try Toastmasters. It's a speech club where they work on public speaking. It is not easy but it is good.

Don't worry about embarrassing yourself. The important thing is that you are trying to learn the language, thank you for your efforts and welcome to North America.
