I adopted a beautiful cat a couple of weeks ago but he drives me nuts sometimes! I love him dearly but he is the most sloppiest litter box user I've had out of all my cats! He'll step in the spot he just went pee, then his back paws smell like urine (and we all know how strong cat pee smells!) and the litter also sticks to his paws. I've even had to cut his hair on his butt too because his poop would stick to it. Ugh! I was thinking his litter box might be too small and thats why he steps in it? Or maybe he just isn't too bright?! He's the sweetest cat though and just loves to get and give affection. I just want him to use the litter box without making such a huge mess! Oh and I've also had to wash his butt twice! Any suggestions?!?!?! Thanks :o)

try a larger litter box. or a cover one or even an uncovered one. if he has long fur it is best to keep near his butt cut short to keep poop from getting caught. for the litter sticking to his paws get a litter mat for outside the box.

If he was stray or in an outdoor/indoor situation, he might not have a litter box sense to him. Try to think about what cats have an instinct for, which is not smelling like urine and having poop on their hair.

If the poop isn't of a solid consistency, check diet, worms, infections and water intake.

If he's still sick, he might not be practicing proper cleaning still. If he was separated from his mother too early he might need to be reminded of how to clean himself. You can do this with a warm wet washcloth. Just "lick" him like a mother cat would (with the cloth, not your tongue!).

I think you're onto a good idea with a larger litter box, but also make sure you have plenty of litter in it, though not so much that he sinks in. At least 2" is required for proper burial.

It might just take time or a change in litter too, before he gets it.

I would try a large covered litter (Walmart sells them) box and get a litter mat around the box to help catch litter that the cat pulls out. A lot of longer haired cats have problems with poo sticking to their fur, so triming the bum area would be a good idea.

Also clean the box everyday, so the cat has less of a chance to step in their messes.

We use Feline Pine clumping litter which I think is great. It is all natural..doesn't have all that unhealthy "stuff" in it like most commercial litters.
Good luck to you.

First- be certain your using clumping clutter, no longer the better clay that doesn't clump with urine. I surely have 3 cats and my neighbor surely asked me almost a similar question "How do you preserve your place from smelling like a clutter field?" you're able to in no way understand I had cats by using the scent. 2d- If the poop is what quite(and that i advise quite) smells, it incredibly is an illustration of kitty issues, many times worms or a foodstuff that doesn't accept as true with the kitty(new ingredients take a whilst to get used to besides). in case you haven't any longer wormed her gain this, a vet can try this or you will get stuff from a puppy keep to do it your self, careful on the dose do no longer over do it yet do no longer below do it the two. third- a trashcan with a bag saved proper beside the field with a lid or a bag you may on the area of incorporate the scent of the freshly scooped yuckies. I scoop once or twice an afternoon, only one field and 3 finished grown(in spite of the undeniable fact that small) Kitty's and my place is oder unfastened. third to the individuals who made comments approximately no longer having your cat indoors, do you already know the common lifespan of an indoor can is 15 years? the place as a cat allowed to bypass exterior, the common lifespan is only 2 years? confident some cats defy the possibilities, yet those are the averages, I had a cat as a baby who lived to be sixteen and it became an exterior and indoor cat yet I watched many different exterior cats experiance the very oposite. good success with the recent kitty, they could be marvelous pets!

Is he a long haired cat? Is he over weight? How old is he?

Sometimes I know if they have been taken away too soon from their mother, they didn't get that training to learn to cover up after themselves.
Try a larger litter box. I don't know, maybe there might not be enough litter in it too. Or you can try a clumping litter that may absorb more quickly than the one that you are using. We have six cats. We had a problem one time like you but we had used a store brand litter and switched. If he has long fur I can bet that this would be a problem also, so you might want to trim away some of it. If he is a heavier cat, they do have a time cleaning themselves so of course you will have to modify his diet. We have a female like this and had to lessen her food intake. Now I don't have to wash her butt, she can do it herself. lol If you can't get your kitty to cover up, you may even want to consider getting a Litter Maid. It will clean the litter for you and kitty! I also have a kitty that doesn't cover up after himself. Usually one of the other cats does it for him. lol

I had the same problem when my kitten was younger. Try using a larger litter box with clay litter-- that way, he won't get clumps of kitty waste on himself. In addition to this, keep some kind of baby wipes or rag next to the litter place (and if you have a room, keep the litter box there.. smelly, I know, but you can monitor him and clean him up.) and clean him up ask quickly as possible. He will get better and catch on.

First of all clean the litter box often. I have a new kitten who is very busy in the litter box, and I clean it several times a day. Then, twice a week I change it, this seems to do the trick. Also, the box is quite large and he has plenty of room to "do his business".
Hope this helps, don't give up!!

I would try a bigger littler box. Maybe even think about getting those automatic cleaning litter boxes. Or you could try different kinds of litter. I'm sorry, that's the best I got. It's really hard to train cats to be "clean".
