A warrant of arrest is a document most often issued by a court for the seizure of a person for a violation of the law. It could be as mundane as his failure to pay automobile citations to murder.
It sounds like to me your friend had a warrant out for him for his failure to pay for citations that he received or for his failure to appear in court.
He certainly knows why as the police are required to notify him as to the warrant and the basis of his detention.

A warrant is a court order signed by a judge, related to criminal activity. You can have an arrest warrant or a search warrant. They basically give the cop permission to either arrest you or search you or your house.
Your friend had a warrant because he either did or didn't do something. If he's had tickets in the past and didn't pay them or go to court, he would have a warrant for his arrest on a failure to appear charge, which means he didn't go to court when he was supposed to, which is a VERY serious thing. The cop should have told him what the warrant was for.

Warrants are issued when youve broken the law, and the law wants to find you.
Most likely your friend forgot to pay his tickets which caused him to have a warrant for his arrest. Pay the tickets and they take the warrants off.

after a ticket is issued, you sign the ticket as an admission to appear ( not pleading guilty by signing) you can by going to court have your side of the ticket heard and a judge renders a decision.
or you can pay the fine.
when neither of the above are done, the court issues a warrant of arrest--to bring before the to answer to why you did not show. does the warrant should have read FTA( failure to appear)

warrants are issued, upon probable cause that a crime has been committed, by a judge either to search something, or arrest someone. In his case, if he did not pay his ticket or go to his court date, A bench warrant would have been issued for his arrest. A bench warrant is issued when you fail to appear at your court date.

A warrant is basically permission for an officer to either search or arrest. Sounds like he didn't pay his tickets after all. =P

A warrant is something a court issues on a person; usually for not appearing in court or not paying tickets and not showing up in court.

If you don't pay a ticket, then they issue a warrant. He must not have paid the ticket. Where I live, if you get a warrant, they mail you something so he should have known.

He didn't pay them so the courts issued a warrent for his arrest. He will go to court, have to pay the fines from before, plus additional troubles for not taking care of his responsibility.
