Unless you plan to never eat carbs again, which is impossible, I would stay away from this diet!

Okay I've done both so ... First of all if you've only lost 5 lbs in one month on a vegetarian diet you probably haven't been exercising and/or you've taken in too many calories. Just because it's non carnivorous doesn't mean its low calorie. Now as for ATKINS run....don't do it. I thought I was so smart and so did all the people I convinced to go on Atkins cause I lost 29 lbs in a month, BUT... not only did the weight come right back the minute I got back to the real world and ate a few carbs. but I gained back more, plus I became a B*tch while on this diet. CRANKY!!! and it was sooooo hard to concentrate as your brain has no energy due to the lack of carbs. It's so physically unhealthy too. It was fun for the first couple of days, bacon, cheese, steaks, salmon, nuts... AKA fat fat fat fat fat fat...then you start to feel like a pan of oil. Makes me sick recalling this diet. How about adding a little lean protein to the veggie diet and exercise the weight off, then you'll have a firm toned body.

Please do not do the Atkins Diet. This is a fad diet that does not work in the long run.
If you want to lose weight, just eat sensibly, if you are confused about what 'sensible eating' is, pls email me.
You must drink a lot of water to flush the fat out of your body, and exercise. Eat fish and chicken (NO SKIN, EVER) Eat as many fruits & veg as you can. No white bread, white rice, or bakery items. Use skim or 1% milk. Pay attention to how many calories you are 'drinking' Think of cream in your coffee, soda, juice, it all adds up.
When eating your meal, start with fruit or veg first, and find a way to include at least 1 fruit or 2 veg in every meal, Example: banana or apple w/oatmeal for breakfast, or an egg & whole wheat toast w/avocado & 1/2 red bell pepper.
Learn the good fats from the bad. Prime rib, Bad. Avocado, nuts, Good.
A simple blood test can determine your LDL & HDL and triglycerides levels. You can recheck in a few months to monitor.
Figure out the triggers that cause you to eat when not hungry and replace the eating with another behavior.
Do not ever skip meals, it slows your metabolism.
You can look into some herbs that are safe and can help jump start your metabolism so your body can burn fat more effectively.
Don't rely on the scale-use a tape measure instead, it will give you a more accurate idea of your progress.
The Atkins Diet will put your body into a state of 'ketosis'.
Too much to explain here but you can look it up. Basically, if you are not consuming enough protein your body will use lean muscle mass for energy.
Atkins book suggests:
Eliminate fruit, bread, pasta, grains, starchy vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, and dairy products (except cheese, cream, and butter).
If one is familiar with the physiology of the human body, this is just ridiculous.
It tells you to eliminate all these very healthy foods (fruit, legumes, seeds, dairy, grain) then eat cheese, cream, & butter. It's crazy to me. However, a little bit of melted butter on your veggies helps your body to more effectively absorb & assimilate the vitamins & nutrients and tastes yummy.
Anyway, good luck! I am not a Dr., but I am certified, and a member of AANC (American Association of Nutritional Consultants). My advisor is Dr. Ballin, a German-Educated Dr. of nutrition who later taught in California. She has written several books on nutrition & counseling skills.
I have helped many people to achieve their goals. The most important thing is not to follow a book, but to learn the secrets to boost metabolism and the magic of healthy food, then you will drop the weight, and keep it off.
I love to see people succeed and I really hope this helps you.
Again, good luck to you, stay motivated & positive.

Atkins is another way of lowering your glycemic intake. Or, another way of putting it: cutting back on sugar. You don't need an all protein diet to cut back on sugar. You just need to cut out all that food that went through a factory in some way. Straight from the farm is better. Or, if you know how to harvest foods from the wild, you can harvest wild edibles and lose weight.
