I'm a Canadian, eh, and live in only one of 2 officially billingual countries in the world--the other is Belgium. Francophonians are not compelled to learn English and anglophonians are not forced to learn French. However, our public school system teaches French from the primary grades, as well as Spanish, German, Latin, etc.in high school, and there is French immersion in some high schools. Knowing both languages gives you an advantage if you want a government job or a political position (federal). It can also be an advantage in big business, although knowing Spanish or Chinese or Punjabi is probably more advantageous for eg.
We have a different situation here--the French were one of our founding nations, as well as the aboriginals. But, especially out west, before the Louisiana Purchase, wasn't Spanish prevalent?
Life changes, countries change. The Mexicans and other Latinos are coming to the USA because they see it as a land of opportunity, prosperity and security. They take risks in coming. They are productive members of society (although not all in every ethnic group are). Their numbers are increasing. Although I believe that a nation must first look to the legal immigrants' needs, this group is going to have an impact on the states. Let's hope its positive. Comparez L'Etats Unis et Canada. Le plus qu'ils changent, le plus qu'ils donc.

He'd have to pay for the language lessens. And since they have long since cut all language out of the middle school curriculum in LA to fund ESL and intervention programs for those illegally here, I suspect there isn't that much money to go around.

Hispanics make up 14% of the US population, and that includes those who have been here hundreds of years and don't know Spanish. There would be far too many to pay to speak Spanish. (300 odd million less 14%.)

That being said, I am so pissed at how much of our children's education has been cut, including language, that if he passed that amendment I'd be one of the first signing myself and my family up.

Knowledge is rarely a bad thing.

And, in accordance to the a lot, Italian is a extra globally used language...why do no longer all of us merely learn that?

No, but it wouldn't hurt to put second-language requirements back into high school curicula. Exposure to another language is a positive thing, and, actually, it often improves your native language skills, as well (grammar rules start to make more sense when you see examples of different grammar rules, for instance).

Are you out of your mind? No way. They shouldn't be coming here illegally! Where's the fence? Why should we be forced to learn Spanish, is it because we would be able to assist the coyotes, drug-dealers, or those who are draining the U.S. economy? Or is it so we can find out the locations of the 72 of our US citizens who were abducted from Mexicans are??????

I dont believe any governmental agency should or would "force" us to learn another language. (unless you consider the translation of many everyday documents already in use as "force") I would suggest, though, that we each make an effort to learn another language, ANY LANGUAGE, in order to better ourselves. My fantasy is that children are taught in elementary school, whether a 2nd language is spoken in the home or not. ( I was taught French in elementary school because it was part of the curiculum, just like English, Math and so forth) I dont speak French today, even after studing it in HS but that foundation left me open minded enough to persue German and Spanish later on in life...both of which helped me get my basic needs met when travelling.
Forced language? nah...lets just choose another language for our own benefit, to help us reach our potentials as human beings.
